I don’t review jewelry often, but when I got the opportunity to try out the lokai bracelet with beads containing mud from the Dead Sea and water from Mt. Everest, I just couldn’t say no.
The story of lokai started when Steven Izen’s Grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Suddenly, Steven found himself overwhelmed by sadness and grief, but at the same time he felt immense gratitude for where he was in his life. That was when he decided to give a physical form to his feelings, and nearly three years later, after countless hours of research and development the lokai bracelet was born. Life is marked by highs and lows. And without one, we could not appreciate the other. The lokai bracelet is a constant reminder that no matter how far the scale tips in one direction, you should always strive for balance.
Why lokai?
Contrary to popular belief, the company wasn’t named after a Star Trek character 🙂 It is merely a reworded Hawaiian word “lokahi” which means “unity” or “to blend opposites”, in other words it means harmony and balance of all things. A very fitting name for this bracelet, indeed. You can read more about “lokahi” here, and, mind you, it’s more complicated than the traditional yin-yang.
The bracelet features three types of beads:
- The black bead contains authentic Dead Sea mud, sourced from the lowest point on Earth. It represents Hope, and reminds us to accept the low parts in life.
- The white bead contains water from Mt. Everest, the highest point on Earth, and some of that water is fused into the silicone mixture itself, which ensures the water is always in the bead in some form, since the material is porous and the water will eventually evaporate. It represents Humility, and reminds us to be modest even when we are on top of the world.
- The clear beads are made of silicone. They represent Clarity in times of joy and sadness.
The bracelet is made of high quality silicone beads, so it’s essentially waterproof and can be worn to the pool, beach, gym, in the shower etc. It comes in three sizes: Small, Medium and Large. As you can see, I got the large one, and I really don’t remember if I could pick my own size or not when I agreed to review it. I have tiny 6″ wrists, so of course it was too big for me, but I still enjoyed wearing it because it doesn’t slip off easily.
I wanted to cut open my bracelet to see for myself if it really contains the mud and the water, but looks like somebody already posted pictures on Instagram, and they found out that the beads do in fact contain mud.
