60’s are so in right now and I couldn’t be happier – after all Audrey Hepburn is my personal style icon, her roles from that decade are amazing! To get one of the hottest makeup looks of the season you won’t need a lot of expensive products: in this tutorial I’m featuring drugstore mascara, foundation and eyeliner from Rimmel London, all of which you can get at your local Walmart.
The essentials: Rimmel London Stay Matte Foundation, ScandalEyes Retro Glam Mascara, and ScandalEyes Gel Eyeliner. |
Products can be easily found at Walmart’s Beauty aisle. |
Recently the brand released Retro Glam Collection of products to help achieve that trendy mod look, perfect for anyone itching to unleash their inner Twiggy. Also, this month Rimmel London is celebrating a 180-year anniversary [woah!], so as a special surprise they will include $1 off coupons for both Stay Matte Foundation and ScandalEyes Retro Glam Mascara in the Sunday newspaper. Talk about sweet beauty savings!
Let’s start the tutorial, shall we?
Our masterpiece requires a good canvas, and Rimmel Stay Matte Foundation is perfect for the task! |
Canvas: Apply foundation. I used Rimmel London Stay Matte Foundation in (010) Light Porcelain, which is the lightest shade. The color ended up just a tad bit pinker than I’d prefer, but it was barely noticeable. I find it best to apply my foundation with a slightly dampened sponge applicator to get an airbrushed effect. I also dabbed a bit of foundation over my lips to make them almost blend with the skin, since we’re going for a classic combination of bold eyes and nude lips, so popular in the 60’s.
Now that the face is prepped, it’s time to make those eyes really stand out.
Only 8 steps to achieve one of the most iconic makeup looks. |
1. Tightline/waterline your top lash line. I normally do it with brow powder or dark eye shadows, so the effect always looks very soft and natural.
2. Line the lower lash line and the inner corners of the eyes with white eyeliner or eye pencil.
3. Apply white or ivory eye shadow all over your top lid.
4. Draw a defined curve slightly over your natural eye crease to make the eyes appear bigger. Any darker shade of eyeshadow will do, but I used charcoal gray. Blend it with a fluffy brush so there are no rough edges.
5. Line your eyes with gel or liquid eyeliner. I used Rimmel London ScandalEyes Gel Eye Liner in (001) Black, which comes with a very nice brush.
6. Curl your eyelashes. I used my heated eyelash curler, but the mechanical curler will work just as well.
7. Apply mascara, at least 3 nice thick coats of it; and don’t forget about those bottom lashes! For this tutorial I used Rimmel ScandalEyesRetro Glam Mascara in Black to achieve a bold, wide-eyed false lash look.
8. Draw vertical lines from your bottom lash line: I used a slightly dampened brush dipped in Rimmel London ScandalEyes Gel Eye Liner. This is probably one of the most iconic makeup techniques from that decade, made extra popular thanks to Twiggy. As an alternative, you can also use small strips of faux eye lashes glued along the bottom lash line, but I think drawing them is just easier and faster.
Ready for a 60’s themed party! 🙂 |
Ta-da! Here’s our finished look, and now you are officially prepared for your mod-themed party 🙂 Or you can wear it every day, if that’s your style. Either way, I absolutely adore this look, and I’m glad to see this makeup trend making a comeback.

Gorgeous look it is super subtle yet dramatic. Love it. Great post and love the tutorials!!!!
Thank you Jamie, glad you like it 🙂 I don’t do tutorials often, so it was quite a challenge. Actually, this might be my first real tutorial, because the ones I did before were basically all looks with text instructions, rather than step-by-step pictures.
I love this! It’s not overdone, and is still pretty
Thank you Kim, so happy to hear that you like it! <3
Nice look! Subtle, yet very eye catching 🙂
Thank you Destany! And woah, you think this is subtle? It’s actually quite bold for me, because I normally wear very earthy colors that don’t stand out in any way 🙂
I definitely love the mod look!
Glad you like it, Jessika 🙂 I’m a big fan of mod style myself.
You did awesome with this look, it is not an easy one
Thank you, Norah, I’m happy to hear that you like it 🙂

Thank you Eugenia, I loved your look, too 🙂 What a fun shoppertunity!
Love the look! Your lower lashes look fab.
Thank you! The secret is to coat them with as many layers of mascara as you would your top lashes, in addition to vertical lines.
Great tutorial!

Subtle but gorgeous!
Glad you like it, Noelle 🙂
Very pretty look! Great idea with the lower lashes! 🙂
Thank you! This technique to draw lower lashes was used quite often in the 60s to create that wide-eyed doll look 🙂
You killed it, this look is amazing! Most ‘mod’ looks I see are not wearable at all but this can totally be worn! Love it!
Thank you Angela, I’m so glad you find this look wearable 🙂 I loved your post too, it’s so bright and fun!
Great tutorial!
Thank you, I’m glad you like it 🙂
It makes your eyes look huge! I need this for my eyes – they tend to get lost behind my glasses.
Girl, it’s all those bottom lashes doing the trick! Make sure to coat them with several coats of mascara and your eye size will quadruple 🙂
Effortless beauty! I love your 60s version, those eyes…. so gorgeous!
Thank you Kath, I was debating about my “hero” image and decided to go for 60’s-inspired magazine advertorial 🙂 You are the first one to mention it!
Love the look! Your eyes look super big!
Thank you Jennica, I’m so happy that you like this look 🙂 It’s very easy to re-create and if you use brown eyeshadow instead of black on your eyelid crease, it will be super wearable even during the daytime.
Your eyes look completely gorgeous!
Thank you Kelly, you are so sweet 🙂 <3
Great tutorial girly! I am doing the one with Gif’s… Kinda nervous about that one!
Thanks, hun! <3 I look forward to reading yours, I’m sure it will be totally fabulous. I didn’t apply because I’m terrified with the idea of having to create videos/gifs.
Oh my – I love this. There are few people that can pull off a mod look and you have nailed it. I really enjoyed the tutorial 😉
Thank you Honey, I’m so happy that you enjoyed my tutorial. I almost had a nervous breakdown when I hit that “Submit” button, because I’ve never really done one before. Your (and everyone else’s) comments made me feel more confident, and maybe I will even post more tutorials in the future 🙂
Love how your lower lashes look!
Thank you, Arielle, I’m so glad that you like the look. Those lower lashes turned out better than I had anticipated, and the secret is 3 coats of mascara 😉
Awesome look. As the other ladies above have said, the 60s really suits you. Not used to seeing a lot of tutorials on your blog, but it’s a welcome addition!
Thank you Amanda, I’m so glad that you like this tutorial! This is actually my first real tutorial, as I have never done them properly before. I will try to post more, but no promises 🙂
Great job with the twiggy-esque bottom lashes!
Thank you Miranda! I love Twiggy, but just had to soften up her look just a little bit and made it more wearable and less edgy 🙂
What a fantastic tutorial. You look like Audrey Hepburn in the ’60’s 🙂 you’re bottom lashes look like falsies…amazing! I would like to recreate the look of a Hollywood femme fatale in the ’40s like rita hayworth or bette davis.
Thank you so much for the compliment, Audrey is my all-time girl crush 🙂
I love your look and the main pic is fantastic!
Thank you Brooke, I loved your tutorial, too. Your final look is a lot more dramatic! 🙂
Very cool! I love it!
Glad to hear that you like it 🙂
Love the little drawing of lines on the lower lashline, it really adds a lot to the look and I want to try it now!
I’m so glad that you like it! This is a very easy technique, but it sure adds a whole lot of drama to the eyes 🙂
I haven’t tried the Rimmel London ScandalEyes Gel Eye Liner. I’ve tried a similar from Maybelline and love it.
That one sounds really nice, too, I may give it a try 🙂
That’s a cute look on you. I love the ScandalEyes eyeliners!
Thank you! 🙂 And I agree with you, ScandalEyes eye liners are great, the whole line is actually pretty impressive.
Love the look. You did a great job of giving a nod to the 60s while still staying modern.
Thank you, I’m glad you like it! 🙂
This is awesome! I would use these products to do a glam Siouxsie Sioux rock look.
Thank you, I’m so happy that you like this tutorial! 🙂
Good work. Like it
