Love With Food Review: October 2012

And here is my long-awaited first Love With Food box! I got a really sweet deal on it combining two promotions from Daily Candy. It ended up costing me only $1.66/month + $2.00 shipping.
I’ve been eyeing this subscription for a while because I totally love the idea of sampling gourmet and hard-to-find yummies. Now, the value of each sample will be a bit tricky to calculate but I’ll do my best to find where all these things are sold.

1. Natasha’s Health Nut Cookies in Cranberry-Orange (1pc)
This was the first product I tried in my box because it looked so soft and yummy. A lot of people would probably find this cookie bland but for being gluten and sugar-free I thought it tasted really good. But then again, I’m one of those weird people who enjoy plain and bland things like white rice or boiled unseasoned chicken breast 🙂 This cookie was very soft and moist and had a mild orange zest taste with hints of coconut. I didn’t notice the cranberry at all.
This product is sugar and gluten-free.

2. Mrs. May’s Superfruit Sesame Strips in Acai-Strawberry (1pk)
I’m not a big fan of sesame seeds in such large quantities so this was just a matter of personal preference that I didn’t care for this sample. Each strip smells very strongly of burnt sesame seeds which I didn’t like. However, it’s much better tasting than I thought it would be. I could definitely taste both the strawberry and acai notes and thought it was a pretty cool idea to combine them. I think it’s a great flavor combination and those of you who like sesame seeds will most likely enjoy this snack.
This product is vegan, gluten and preservative-free.

3. GoGo SqueeZ Applesauce in AppleApple (1pk)
I’m familiar with GoGo Squeez products and only have nice things to say about this applesauce. They literally make them with nothing but apples and natural apple juice concentrate. The packaging is very clever and convenient, you can use it as a mess-free snack on the go.
This product is all-natural, gluten, nut and dairy-free.

4. Numi Organic Pu Erh Tea Mini Sampler (1 box)
Pu-erh tea is a very different kind of tea than most of us are used to. It’s very bitter and mostly consumed in Asia for its health benefits rather than for pleasure. Numi decided to mix regular pu-erh with various fruits, flowers and spices to make it more enjoyable. The sampler pack contains 7 individually packaged tea bags of 6 flavors: Coconut, Chocolate, Emperor’s (two bags), Jasmine, Basil Mint, Cardamom and Ginger. I have tried the mint one before and kind of liked it, I think it did a pretty good job masking the bitternes of pu-erh. And right now I’m sipping a cup of Ginger flavored one. I think I like it, as much as one might like pu-erh. It’s definitely better than drinking it plain.
This product is non-GMO, fair trade and certified organic.

5. Nature’s Kick Blackberry Blossom Honey Straws (3pc)
I’m not a honey expert and can barely tell the difference between one type of honey and another. This particular honey was very mild. I added the contents of one straw to my pu-erh and I it made the tea taste much better without being too sweet.

6. Snikiddy Baked Fries in Cheddar Cheese (1pk)
These little sticks look like fries but taste like cheese puffs. Now I’m usually not a fan of cheese puffs but I really liked these. I enjoyed the cheddar flavor and the texture and the crispiness and might end up buying more if I see a good discount.
This product is all-natural, kosher, vegetarian, cholesterol, corn syrup,  gluten and wheat-free.

7. Enjoy Life Seed & Fruit Mix in Mountain Mambo (1pk)
I haven’t actually tried this one yet, but from the ingredients I can tell it will go well drizzled over my spinach salad. I will probably have to remove the chocolate chunks manually but everything else sounds like it would be yummy 🙂 This mix contains sunflower kernels, roasted hulled pumpkin seeds, raisins, dried apples, chocolate chips and dried cranberries.
This product is vegan, kosher, natural, gluten and casein-free.

What do you think about this month’s box? Would it have been worth it if you paid the full price for this subscription? Value-wise probably not, but I still loved the thrill of discovering new brands and products and this is something I always force myself to remember. I enjoyed this box so much I didn’t even care that the value ended up being fairly low, and this is ultimately the attitude I try to have toward all of my boxes.
