Aromatherapy On The Go with NOW® Essential Oil Aromatherapy Blends
Even though fall is my favorite season, the winter holidays are hands down my favorite time of the year. Growing up in Russia where it can easily snow from November through mid-April, we learn to love and appreciate the cold weather, and even find it charming. But fun as it is, this time can be quite stressful, too. There are just so many things to coordinate, prepare, wrap the gifts, arrange everyone’s holiday schedules and plan activities with family and friends. And this is where my favorite aromatherapy blends come in!
The whole goal of aromatherapy is to stimulate the smell receptors in your nose, which then send messages through the nervous system to the part of the brain that controls emotions. That kind of explains why the individual results always vary greatly, some people are simply more emotional than others and react more strongly to scents while others remain unmoved. I’ve always been a sensitive kid, sometimes too sensitive if you ask my husband [who thinks I cry all the time and for any reason, LOL], and I bet that’s probably why aromatherapy works so well for me.
For the longest time, I believed that using an essential oil diffuser was the best way to enjoy aromatherapy at home, but I noticed that my diffuser started bothering my cat. After some research, I found out that there’s a long list of essential oils that shouldn’t be used around animals, so I decided to stick to the next best thing – fragrant sachets and roll-on blends.
I keep a small lavender sachet under my pillow and periodically refresh it with a drop or two of lavender oil. I find that the smell of lavender helps me relax at night, and I fall asleep faster when I think about lavender fields rather than counting sheep. I also have small sachets in my sock and underwear drawers scented with sweet orange and vanilla – that’s such a nice combination, you’ve got to try it someday!
Roll-on oil blends are definitely the best way to enjoy aromatherapy on the go. Until recently I was using a different brand, but NOW® just released their own essential oil roll-ons and I’ve been loving them all. They come already pre-diluted in Jojoba Oil in concentrations safe for topical use, so you can apply them to bare skin. Everyone’s tolerance of essential oils is different, so if you experience any sensitivities or redness be sure to discontinue use immediately.
New blends include:
- Lavender Essential Oil Blend Organic Roll-On (Calming & Soothing) – organic lavender oil diluted in organic jojoba seed oil. Lavender oil is one of the best selling essential oils at NOW®, and actually NOW® is one of the largest sellers of lavender oil in the world. Pretty impressive, isn’t it?
- Head Relief Essential Oil Blend Roll-On (Calming & Soothing) – a blend of lavender, spike lavender, eucalyptus leaf and Roman chamomile flower essential oils diluted in organic jojoba seed oil. To me, this blend has a special meaning. As a kid, I loved harvesting wild chamomile flowers with my grandma, so the smell of chamomile always reminds me of her. It’s not only soothing but also very nostalgic.
- Eucalyptus Essential Oil Blend Organic Roll-On (Clarifying & Revitalizing) – organic eucalyptus leaf oil diluted in organic jojoba seed oil. You know what this blend reminds me of? As a home remedy, my mom made me smell eucalyptus oil every time I had a cold, and while it didn’t magically cure the symptoms, I always felt temporary relief.
- Tea Tree Essential Oil Blend Organic Roll-On (Purifying, Cleansing, Renewing) – organic tea tree leaf oil diluted in organic jojoba seed oil. This scent wakes me up better than the smell of coffee! Sometimes I even put a drop of pure tea tree oil on the floor in the shower to create fragrant steam. The trick is to make sure that the oil doesn’t get on my skin, so I put it somewhere in the corner where it can’t easily reach my feet. The effect of the roll-on application is just as invigorating, but it can linger on the skin longer than I’d like so sometimes I just sniff the rollerball for a quick energy boost.
These blends come in convenient glass bottles with roll-on applicators that seal tightly to prevent spills. However, just to be on the safe side I don’t recommend pushing on the roller applicator too hard, because it can make the little plastic ball sink deeper into the bottle and cause the oil to leak from under the cap. I ruined a bag with a roll-on perfume before, so don’t be like me, haha!
I compare the benefits of aromatherapy to a stress ball. I don’t think it actually reduces stress, but it forces me to redirect my attention and hopefully, allow the negative emotions to dissipate. Usually, it helps, and sometimes it doesn’t, but I will always try a gentler approach first before reaching for the medicine cabinet. Aromatherapy blends help me to slow down, breathe in, breathe out and see things in a new light. Some blends are relaxing, others are uplifting, and there are some that just smell really nice. Surrounding myself with the scents I love never fails to brighten the mood, no matter how busy the day gets.
