Starlooks Starbox Unboxing and Review: June 2013

Starlooks celebrated their one year anniversary in June, can’t believe it’s already been a year since they launched! This month’s theme is called Modern Warhol, and we’re obsessing over all things mod: winged eye liners, white eye pencil, huge hair, and biiiiiiiig eyes a-la Twiggy circa 1960’s.

About Starbox:
Starbox is a makeup subscription from Starlooks Cosmetics. Each Starbox includes 3-4 FULL SIZE makeup/beauty products delivered to your door for $15/month. The value of your box will always be much higher.

Precision Eye Definer Pen
The tip of this liner is so thin, you could draw the most intricate patterns if you ever needed to. The application took almost no time, and the line lasted all day. It was very easy to remove, so I was surprised that it actually stayed on for so long.
Overall: 4.5/5
Purchase: Yes

Eye Pencil in White
White eye pencils are totally mod when paired with black winged eye liner. I’m a big fan of Starlooks eye and lip liners, and this one didn’t disappoint either. The line was precise and provided great color payout, but looks like it’s lacking the staying power. After a few hours the line dimmed considerably, and by the end of the day I could barely tell that there used to be a white eye liner at all.
Overall: 4/5
Purchase: Yes

Bronzer in Montego Bay
You know me, I’m not a bronzer gal at all, so I was a little disappointed that we got one. But I can see how it goes with the theme of the box, since sunkissed skin was a huge thing back in the 60s-70s. This bronzer comes in a big round compact with large mirror, and being able to see your entire face while applying this type of product is actually very important. The creamy texture goes on smoothly and evenly, and sets with a beautiful satiny finish.
Overall: 4/5
Purchase: No

[Extra] Peace Pin
This was a little something extra in our boxes, a little hippie throwback that goes along with the whole Warhol theme. I wore these in the early 90s, but for the past 15 years they weren’t considered cool at all. I don’t know, it’s just not my thing I guess…

The verdict: If you read to this point I’m sure you’re wondering “Sooo…. what’s so special about this anniversary box?” And I’ll tell you, nothing. Yep, unfortunately Starlooks didn’t prepare any sweet surprises for their subscribers, so I was a bit disappointed. Overall, this box was filled with basics, and although I think basics are great and useful, I was hoping for at least one item to be a fun discovery. I have decided to pause my Starbox subscription for the time being and use that money to try out another monthly service.

Are you a Starlooks Starbox subscriber? What did you think about their anniversary box?

Thanks Betzy 🙂 Well, at least I have more basics now… Not like I needed them, but still it’s better than useless products.

Nice basics, but really–where’s the anniversary bonus? There out to be something! The pin does not count. 😛

Yeah, well, there really was nothing else 🙁 Bummer!

Starlooks Starbox Unboxing and Review: May 2013

Skipping April Starbox was a huuuge mistake! I thought I would unsubscribe because I already have way too much makeup as it is, but seeing everyone’s April unboxings and swatches made me super jealous and sad that I missed out. So, of course I re-subscribed again, and this is my slightly belated review of the May box. The theme this month is “Tribal” and our boxes came painted with a zebra print and lovely ethnic terracotta + gold tissue paper inside.

Actually, now that I think about it, I’m not too sure if I actually purchased this Starbox or if it was sent to me for reviewing. I was recently contacted by Starlooks’ PR rep with an opportunity to review some of their products, and I chose Infinity lipsticks and a brow kit (before I even knew what will be in this month’s Starbox). Since I re-subscribed on May 2nd it’s very possible that they sent me a Starbox instead of a singular brow kit, and I will eventually receive the Infinity lipsticks, too. So I’m leaving this post without a disclaimer for now, and I’ll update it asap when I figure out if I actually bought this one myself.

Update: I bought this, after all! :))

Brow Shader in BS3
This quad contains four colors to fill in and outline the brows. They all are very lightly pigmented to prevent us from using too much, which is a great thing. All Starlooks products can serve multiple purposes, and this quad is no exception: all of these colors can be mixed together and combined for sculpting the face, or as eye shadows.
Overall: 4.5/5
Purchase: Yes

Pigment Luster in Cinnamon Toss
This fabulous pigment has fantastic color payout and the shade is universally flattering. This particular color that I got is no longer sold on starlooks.com, now all of the shades have been renamed, and I think the closest one is Black Gold. Starlooks recommends mixing these pigments with clear gloss to create your own unique colors, as well as using them the traditional way for putting on eyelids as an all over color or as an eyeliner.
Overall: 4/5
Purchase: Yes

Cream Blusher in Emphasize (now Merlot)
I would have never bought this shade for myself, but surprisingly it looks absolutely natural and sets with a lovely dewy finish. These blushes can be worn as lipsticks, lip glosses and even on your eyelids.
Overall: 4.5/5
Purchase: Yes

Little extra – a nail file with a zebra print, and two full-face pictures using the products in this box 🙂

The verdict: Yet again,. a fantastic box from Starlooks and I got absolutely blown away by the quality of the products. As some of my fellow beauty bloggers said, we are most likely witnessing the birth of a cult brand. So in a couple of years when Starlooks gets big and popular, I’ll put on my hipster glasses and say that I’ve been using Starlooks since before most people knew it existed.

Disclosure: I bought this.

Out of all the boxes I have seen on blogs and have not subscribed for I actually like this one…hmm I may have to look into it, looks like you got some great things.

Starbox is a great subscription for any makeup lover, and the quality of their products will blow you away (if that’s the only thing you’re concerned about). If it’s within your budget, I highly recommend you give them a shot 🙂

This box looks really interesting and I don’t know many people who subscribe to it…I might drop one of my current subscriptions and switch to this! To help me decide…where does this rank, roughly, in your top sub boxes?

    • June 1, 2013 / 9:20 pm

It’s my fourth favorite after Yuzen, Popsugar, and Juniper.
But it’s my #1 makeup subscription, and if I had to choose between Ipsy and Starlooks, I would choose Starlooks.

The brand is not all that well-known yet, but they are working with the former MAC chemists, so the quality is actually comparable to MAC products.

      I hope that helped!

It does! Obviously I can’t really tell, but they LOOK high quality. Thank you!
