PIXI Mattelustre Lipsticks or Shea Butter Lip Balms: My Favorite Shades
If PIXI makeup is not on top of your drugstore must try list, it should be. The brand always impressed me with their high quality products and fun aesthetic. It’s the main reason that I’m sad about the Target store closing in my area, actually, because that means no more quick access to my favorite Lower Lash Mascara and a couple other faves. Today I wanted to feature six lippies that are perfectly neutral, perfectly wearable, and perfectly fit in with my everyday fall outfits.
PIXI Shea Butter Lip Balm in Natural Rose, Sweet Peach, and Ripe Raspberry.

PIXI Shea Butter Lip Balm ($8 for 0.141 oz) comes in six beautiful shades, some of which are quite pigmented. I own four of them [one I purchased myself, and three were sent by PR], but lately I’ve been using Natural Rose, Sweet Peach, and Ripe Raspberry a lot. I like that these are not crazy expensive, make me look put together, and I can easily pick them up at a local Target. Until they close the nearby store that is. 🙁
Even though these balms have ‘butter’ in the name, the finish on the lips is not greasy at all. If anything, it gives more of a matte look with a sheer hint of color that can be built up to be more opaque after a few extra swipes. The formula is enriched with nourishing shea butter, castor oil, and vitamin E that help heal dryness and cracks.

PIXI Mattelustre Lipstick ($12 for 0.13 oz) is a long-time favorite of mine. The finish is pretty unique – it’s like like a mix of matte and satin finishes, which doesn’t make sense really until you see it on the lips. At the time of this review, there are 11 colors in the collection, and today I am showing you three of them: Peach Blossom, Bitten Rose, and Rose Naturelle. These are all very different, but they look incredibly flattering with my skin tone. I’ve been wearing Bitten Rose a lot lately, it’s so perfect for fall!
The formula is enriched with peptides, hyaluronic acid, and vitamins C & E, so the lipsticks actually cares for the lips, making them look fuller and more hydrated, while protecting them from free radicals and other environmental stressors.
Important note: Since these lipsticks don’t contain added fragrance, they have a slight chemical smell, so keep that in mind.
You will LOVE these if:
- You love to support cruelty-free brands.
- You prefer products with no added fragrance.
- You love both matte and glossy lipstick finishes. This formula is both.
- You like to shop for makeup in retail stores. You can check out this line at your local Target.
- You like buildable coverage.
You will HATE these if:
- You prefer ultra-matte or high-shine finishes.
- You are on a tight budget. For drugstore lipsticks, these are priced higher than similar products from other brands.
- You prefer all-natural cosmetics.
- You are sensitive to any of the ingredients.

BOTTOM LINE:
If you read more reviews online, you will quickly notice that there are many different opinions about these lipsticks and tinted balms. Personally, I think both are nice, but as always, I added a list of cons and pros so you can easily determine if these products are right for you. Personally, I think the lip balms are awesome because they can be applied without a mirror. And as a fan of matte and semi-matte lipstick finishes, I always felt like the Mattelustre line was made for me. I feel weird when I wear very shiny lippies, so matte and semi-matte is where it’s at for me, always.
Have you tried PIXI makeup before? Which lipstick finish do you prefer: matte, semi-matte, or glossy? Let me know in the comments below!
They all look great on you, Anastasia! I got one of the Mattelustre Lipsticks with my Ipsy points, but the shade Honey Bare looks awful on me, and I don’t love the formula. The shades you got are much prettier. The Lip Balms look very promising!
Thank you Allison! Sorry to hear that you didn’t like the Mattelustre formula. I definitely saw some negative reviews on these, mostly because they are a bit sheer and smell like chemicals (since there’s no added fragrance to mask it).
I like that your always include pros and cons! I have the lip balms, I may do a giveaway on them
Everyone’s experience will always be different, and it’s the best way to share my biased opinion while also providing some objective notes.
I like the lip balms a lot. I don’t wear heavy lip shades during the day so these suit me well. All the shades look so great on you!
Glad to hear that you like the lip balms too, Marcia! They provide just enough color for casual everyday wear 🙂
I love both of these the balms and the lipsticks, love that they stain a bit so the color doesn’t fade quick!
Nice! Which of these are your favorites that you reach for the most?
They all look super nice ananda fab on you!
Thank you!
Based on your review – it looks like I may like the balms. 🙂
Good choice!
These are all beautiful. It’s just a gorgeous hint of color.
Glad to hear that you like these too!
Very pretty! I like that they don’t have a scent to them.
Well, they are fragrance-free but not scent-free. Since no fragrance was added, you pretty much end up smelling the ingredients they’re made with, so the scent is a bit chemical.
I love these too, they feel so good on the lips. ALL these colors suit you!
I remember reading your review, your swatches were great! And thank you!
These are really pretty. I love the hint of colour they add to your look without being overwhelming.
Likewise, I feel like lipsticks that are not super opaque look the most natural and can work with any outfit.
I like lippies with just a hint of color. These look nice.
Glad to hear that you like them, too!
I honestly like every one of these on you.
Thank you!
Can you believe I’ve never tried this brand?! I need to change that! 🙂
I totally can! I avoided them for a while too, because they’re generally a little more expensive than a typical drugstore brand. But the quality is definitely on the higher end!
Rose Naturelle is right up my alley. These are so fun! I haven’t tried Pixi makeup in a long while.
They have some really great products now. I used to hate their bronzers back in the day 🙂
Bitten Rose is something I would wear frequently. They all look quite nice.
Glad you like them, Courtney!
I’ve never heard of PIXI, but now I need to try them out. I love more natural makeup on myself so I know I can have fun with this brand.
Their shade range is general is targeted for people who prefer a more natural and classic look. There are a few palettes with bright colors, but pretty much everything else is girly and rosy 🙂
The lipsticks are a favorite of mine, too. I love how creamy they feel and how moisturizing they are. Plus there’s excellent color payoff.
I agree, these are very nice for a drugstore brand.
I love their lustremattes for the days when my lips aren’t in the best condition…but I still want to have it look mostly matte. 🙂 They’re really comfortable 🙂
