NYX Lip Lingerie Swatches of Push-Up, Bedtime Flirt, Exotic, and Ruffle Trim | Great Drugstore Matte Lipsticks

If there’s one thing I learned from makeup trends this year, it’s the fact that matte lip is a surprisingly flattering look on me. All my life I gravitated toward glossier finishes, and I have a lot more lip gloss tubes in my stash than all other lip products combined. Well, what I meant to say is that I had that many glosses, but not anymore. After falling in love with matte finish I promptly found new homes for most of my glosses and lipsticks that I probably won’t wear again until they reach the expiration date. Anyhow, it was Colourpop that started my obsession with matte lippies, but it’s NYX Lip Lingerie [$7, available here] that I’ve been using the most lately.

I had no idea about this release, but after seeing a review on Linda’s blog I knew there were at least four shades that needed to be in my collection pronto. I tracked them down online at CVS, and after stacking coupons, cashback, and a special BOGO promotion scored all four for just $20 shipped! And yes, I had these in my stash for a very long time now, but for some reason never thought about writing a proper review, even though they were constantly in rotation.

The colors I picked up are Push-Up [medium taupe], Bedtime Flirt [rosy cinnamon], Ruffle Trim [dusty peach], and Exotic [faded brick red]. Keep in mind when buying that all of NYX Lip Lingerie shades look darker on the lips than they do in the tube.

NYX describes this release as their take on trendy matte lip meets YLBB [“your lips but better”]. These weightless liquid lipsticks go on creamy and set with a plush matte finish. Nowadays you will be hard pressed to find a makeup company that hasn’t released their own version of liquid matte lipstick, but few truly nailed the formula. FYI, in this review I am comparing NYX Lip Lingerie to other popular liquid lipstick formulas people seem to like: Colourpop and Kat Von D. A lot of you also seem to like Stila liquid lipsticks, but I wasn’t a fan; I guess there’s something about my body chemistry that disagrees with them.

Basically, for me the formula of NYX Lingerie liquid lipsticks is perfect. I like that they are intensely pigmented, and just one swipe is enough for opaque coverage. They take longer to set, giving me freedom to fix any mistakes and uneven edges, or fill in spots that need a little extra color. This formula is more buttery than Colourpop and KVD, so my lips look matte but not parched and full of lines, if you know what I mean. Until I tried Lip Lingerie I didn’t even realize that matte liquid lipsticks can look anything but dry. As you can see from the full-face selfie above, my lips don’t look like I am severely dehydrated, yet there’s no trace of sheen at all. I am wearing Bedtime Flirt, which is currently my favorite among the four.

If you happen to eat, wipe off, or kiss away your NYX Lip Lingerie, you can safely apply a fresh layer on top of the already existing one without worrying that it will flake off, like Colourpop and KVD lippies. However, both Colourpop and KVD have one pretty significant advantage – they last a lot longer on the lips, and with some colors you don’t need any touchups. Another advantage is the shade range: at the time I wrote this review NYX lineup was comprised only of neutrals, while Colourpop and KVD both have  a wide range of fun colors to choose from.

BOTTOM LINE:

I am very impressed with NYX Lip Lingerie, even though they only come in neutral shades. The formula is perfect for everyday wear and doesn’t look or feel as dry on the lips as other matte liquid lipsticks I tried. I wish I could compare them with everyone’s favorites from Jeffree Star, but I don’t own any. In any case, at $7 a pop these are a steal and will make a great addition to your makeup stash if you are into the matte lip trend.

You can purchase NYX Lip Lingerie at Ulta, local drugstores.
