After buying both previous editions of the OMG Memebox I’ve come to expect a selection of products that feature unusual ingredients. This time around we received five full-sized items, and even though to me personally they didn’t have the OMG factor I keep hoping for, I really liked the selection.
HOW IT WORKS
Memebox Global is not a typical subscription service. They periodically curate boxes filled with assorted beauty products popular among Koreans, and those Limited Edition bundles are sold on first come first serve basis. Prices vary depending on the type of the box. Memebox ships internationally, so make sure to check on their website and see if they ship in your country – chances are they do. All themed boxes tend to sell out fast, so by the time you read this review this particular box might not be available for sale anymore.

Cleomee Three-Layer Perfume Donkey Oil Mist – It’s donkey oil, you guys! This three layer “spray cake” is not a body moisturizer but rather a perfumed body oil, rich in vitamins and minerals. The chemical composition of donkey milk is very similar to human breast milk, which is kind of weird to think about. From old texts and legends we know that Cleopatra herself took donkey milk baths every day, and considering that she is known to be one of the prettiest women of the Ancient world, I’m willing to bet she knew a thing or two about beauty.
When I first sprayed it on my skin [legs] the fragrance seemed too strong and actually kind of unpleasant, but a minute later all that crazy floralness died down and revealed a lilac garden in Spring. This seasonal reference might not be totally appropriate for this time of the year, but I really like the smell of blooming lilacs. Unfortunately, that’s where my positive experience ends. The consistency is like your typical dry oil, it’s not sticky, but it’s also not moisturizing. If anything, I think my skin was a bit irritated from the chemical fragrance and alcohol in the formula, so I will stop using it and put it in the box for someone else to try. I want to add that I normally like Cleomee products, but this spray in particular just didn’t work for me.
On The Body Makgeolli Soap – Makgeolli is a type of wine made with fermented rice, water, and wheat, that has been produced since 10th century. It recently became popular again with Korean hipsters, so the makgeolli market is on the rise, with lots of new rice wine-inspired products coming out every day.
I do like fancy solid soap bars, but rarely buy them because good soap is really hard to find these days, and thanks to Memebox I now have a small collection of quality bars I will keep on using for months to come. I never tried makgeolli wine, but I tried sake and the scent of this soap reminds me of it. It’s one of those love or hate fragrances that some people might find unpleasant, but I think of it as neutral. Memebox listed the value of this soap at $12, but on the official website they’re sold for 6200 won for a 5-pack, which makes them roughly $1.14 each. *shrugs*
Migabee Bee Venom & Honey Cream – Bee venom is supposed to be the OMG ingredient here, but to me it’s more like HG ingredient, it makes my skin look and feel amazing. Migabee has been one of my favorite brands discovered through Memebox, and I almost feel like a collector, because I dedicated an entire drawer in my IKEA Alex to their products.
Those of you who never tried skincare with bee venom, contrary to what your common sense tells you, it doesn’t sting or make the skin turn red. The products smell and feel just like any other cream, and the effect is comparable to hyaluronic acid meets AHA meets extra mild botox. This moisturizer has a sweet scent of honey and silky creamy consistency, that spreads well and works like magic overnight under the sleeping pack. If I ever manage to score another jar, I’ll be quite happy 🙂
Tosowoong Platinum Pore Tightening Pack – Made with platinum powder and tea tree oil, this mud mask is great for absorbing excess oil from the pores. Tosowoong is a very well-known Korean brand, and they usually make good quality products, so I decided to try this pore pack immediately after opening the box.
I was very impressed with this mask, it was easy to apply in one smooth and even layer without wasting the product, and I could tell that it started working right away. Even though it’s clay-based, it doesn’t create those painful cracks on the skin when it starts to dry. I waited 10 minutes, then washed it off, and the result was just what I expected – clear pores, and instantly brighter complexion. Good stuff!
Tonymoly Delight Tint Crayon 06 Neon Pink – This chubby lip pencil looks like any other, but what makes it unique is the ability to glow under the strobe light, so it’s great for party or costume makeup. Tonymoly makes these in seven colors, including lime green, and as far as I know everyone received 06 Neon Pink [it’s almost a Memebox Pink!].
I think it’s a nice wearable color that almost anyone can pull off. Now, do I really want my lips to glow in the dark? I don’t think so. This seems like a fun idea for clubbing or partying, but it’s just not my style, so I will only use it during the daytime.
THE VERDICT
So what do you think about this box? As I stated in the intro paragraph, even though none of these products were particularly shocking, I still discovered two new favorites – Migabee moisturizer and Tosowoong clay mask, both of which I’m pretty excited to start using regularly.
