Juniper Box Unboxing and Review: May 2013

It’s time to celebrate our womanhood by treating ourselves to delicious snacks and soothing tea during that “time of the month”. As always, my Juniper box was packed full with all monthly essentials plus a little unexpected surprise item.

By the way, do you ever read those glossy cards that come in your subscriptions? I never read any of them, except for my Juniper box inserts, because they’re always witty and fun. Here’s the May one for you (I thought the Parks and Rec reference was brilliant!).

“Hello Friend!

Did you know that May is National Hook-up Awareness month? It’s not. I just made that up. Glossy cards like this always have these profound life-affirming messages of zen, but I just want to keep Juniper cards witty, and our boxes full of indulgences. This month’s box is a little different: I found these adorable tins of lipbalm which I simply had to share. Treat yo’ lips! Also, Pretzels Crisps – pretzel shaped like chips! Pretty much the best invention, ever/ I highly recommend smearing these with upscale-nutella: salty, crunchy, and chocolatey-hazelnut-buttery goodness. Happiness. Will. Ensue.

Do you still want a life-affirming message? Here it is: be your effing self. Eat what you like. Say what’s on your mind. Do what makes you feel beautiful. There’s only one person like you. Do it for Mr. Rogers – be yourself!”

Davidson’s Tulsi Chamomile, Hibiscus and Signature Blend & GloryBee Honey Straws in Blackberry, Mango and Mint
Tea and honey are my PMS staples, and Juniper didn’t disappoint. I have never heard of Davidson’s tea before but I’m definitely going to check it out, because I really liked all three of these Tulsi teas. The honey sticks were also heavenly, especially the mango one! I went to GloryBee website to find out more about them, and right now they have a sale going on AND they have a limited stock of the rare PNW meadowfoam honey which I hurried to buy as soon as I saw the ad ๐Ÿ™‚

Cherry Bay Orchards Montmorency Cherries
I’ve always associated cherries with summer, so these brought a lot of sun into my house, even when it was actually cloudy outside. At only 90 calories per pack, these little natural delights are a healthy, sweet, and guiltless snack for any time of the day.

Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut Spread
This nutty spread is seriously amazing, and I’m not a spread person and never have been. I never cared for Nutella or for PB, but this spread was so addicting, and it actually tasted like nuts instead of pasty sugar!

Clean Getaway Soap Company Lip Balm
This lip balm smells absolutely delightful and totally edible! This little tin made a cute addition to my purse, and I already had one lady ask me where I got it ๐Ÿ™‚

Pretzel Crisps Deli Style Original Pretzels
Brilliant! This is one of those things that makes you go “omg why didn’t I think of it myself”. Such a simple idea but it’s exactly what was missing from the pretzel shelf. I absolutely adore these thin little pretzels and I can totally see why Pink (and probably other celebs) love them too.

and, of course, the Girly Goodies
Everything was in place, in the quantities specified in the email communications.

I love Juniper, this month will be my 5th month receiving it. I love that you get yours before mine, because then I can get a sneak peak and know what to look forward to.
That being said, after seeing this, I’m already seriously disappointed by this months and I haven’t even gotten it yet. The treats I’ve become accustomed to being high class “gourmet” “artisan” goodies. But for the first time since I’ve had the subscription, not one, but two of the treats are your average, run-of-the-mill grocery store snacks.
Don’t get me wrong, the pretzels and the hazelnut spread are both good, but they’re also things that I’ve bought many times in the last year or two.
The reason I loved Juniper so much was because to introduced me to posh new foods, haha. I’m afraid that this box may be a reflection of where the subscription service is heading, and I’m not pleased.

Hi Mandy! I appreciate the criticism. These treats were all new to me, so maybe that’s why I didn’t feel the same way about them, but the box seemed like it should have contained at least one more item. Did you think the same thing or is it just me?
I was still happy with the May selection, but I hope the future boxes are a bit more full.

Oh, maybe its a regional thing, but all my friends keep the pretzel crisps in their house. Everyone I know loves them with hummus. They are good, but, at least around here, its the healthy equivalent of having like, cheetos in the box.

But yeah, it does seem to be.. lacking something. I think it’s because two of the items, the hazelnut spread and the crisps, were intended to be eaten together, so it seems like they count as one.

I think the reason I’m so critical of this box is because I love the subscription, and it really worries me that the value of the boxes will decline, and start containing more “common” treats.

That’s pretty much what happened to Goodies Co boxes, they started off by sending nice gourmet/hard to find/small batch products and now it’s all Chips Ahoy and Newton’s fig bars ๐Ÿ™

I know, that’s why I’m worried ;( I feel like its because so many people are getting their first box free, then cancelling, that they’re losing money and are trying to counteract that by using less expensive treats. But I’d rather them either have the second month free, or the first month half off or something so that they are making more money, without sacrificing quality. It’s just so upsetting to me

They have actually paused the referral program for now, probably because of the reason you described. I hope that promotion paid off and they get some new loyal subscribers.

    • May 13, 2013 / 8:55 pm

I didn’t know that! Ok, so hopefully once peoples free boxes run out and they start to make an actual profit, the treats will return to their usual quality, haha.

BTW, I should mention, that I love your blog. It’s my favorite! I love that you take the time to actually touch on each individual item in the boxes, link to the products website, tally the value, the whole nine yards! No other blogs that I’ve seen have done that. You rock!

Oh my, thank you so much! ๐Ÿ™‚

Before I created Glamorable I’ve been following many blogs that cover various subscription services, and I always wanted to see every item in detail, rather than one small picture of everything together, as well as the overall value I get for my buck. I always thought to myself that if I ever started a blog, I would do these individual reviews and breakdowns. I’m just happy to know there’s at least one other person who finds this info useful ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi! Sorry I’m late to the discussion! Thanks for the constructive comments, I really appreciate them! Sorry that the May package fell short of expectations, I hope that you will like what we have in store for June! Xoxo, Lynn

Hi, Lynn! Thanks for stopping by, we know you have a lot on your plate – running a successful business such as Juniper has to be a tough job. Looking forward to the June treats! (although I won’t see them until the end of the month)
