FOREO Luna vs Luna Mini: Which One Do You Need?

FOREO Luna is truly an amazing device! It was the first sonic brush I tried many years ago, and still my №1 choice for traveling. At this time, Luna is the only facial cleansing device that combines the sonic pulsations with non-abrasive silicone bristles that can also double up as an anti-aging face massager. To accommodate for those who prefer smaller devices, FOREO also created Luna Mini, a little sister to the original, that is just as effective. Now, considering the price of each device, most of us can probably reasonably afford only one, and hopefully this review will help you decide which of these two you might want to go with, or if you even need one at all. For full disclosure, I want to mention that I bought Luna Mini myself, and just recently I was sent a full-sized Luna to try.

That was perhaps the driving force behind my purchase, since the price of buying new brush heads every few months adds up quickly.

Another thing I adore both about Luna and Luna Mini is that they are very energy efficient – one full charge lasts over 450 full cleansing routines. Imagine having to charge your brush only once a year!

Luna Mini works for all skin types and features more rows of thin bristles, and my full-sized Luna is great for combination skin, because it has alternating rows of thin and thick bristles for some extra scrubbing.

Instead, it has several rows of thicker, more abrasive bristles that are great for cleansing the T-zone, if necessary. After over a month of using Luna’s anti-aging side, I’m not quite sure it’s doing anything; only time will tell if it was effective. However, all of us can use deeper cleansing in the T-zone from time to time, so Luna Mini is the winner here I think.

Luna and Luna Mini both come with several speeds. Luna Mini only has two, and you switch between them by continuously pressing the middle button. Full-sized Luna has several, and you adjust it by pressing + and -. The device will even remember your choice and automatically use the last speed you used next time it’s turned on.

The surface very easy to sanitize with plain old antibacterial soap: just lather up the brush after use, run it under tap water, and it’s as good as new!

So which one do you need? If you are looking for a great cleansing device and don’t care much about the anti-aging benefits, multiple speeds or having it tailored for your skin type, Luna Mini is a good choice. Its size also makes it great for traveling, because it won’t take much space in your cosmetic bag. If you prefer using products and devices that directly address your skin’s concerns, a full-sized Luna would be a better choice. It also feels better in the hand, and I found it easier to maneuver.

WHERE TO BUY:

I do like sonic cleansing devices! And I love my LUNA. Your pic of your LUNA and it’s Mini Me is so cute.

Thank you Erika! They make a great couple 🙂

Since I have a Soniclear, I’m not sure I need another device. That said, I am curious about whether the Luna for Sensitive Skin would be better for my skin so that I could use it more often. I need to try one out somehow, one of these days!

    • August 11, 2015 / 11:41 am

I have a Soniclear too (two of them actually, due to some mistake), and out of all brush-types it’s my favorite. I do like Luna more when my skin is feeling irritated though.

Hmm I think I’d probably get the Mini! I figure $60 is a big difference and I can get my anti-aging benefits through my skincare anyway

    • August 11, 2015 / 11:31 am

$60 difference is definitely a big chunk of money that could be spent on other things.

I only bought the mini (because I had run out of cash when I reached the counter LOL) and I love it. I’m not too keen on anti-ageing right now so I’m pleased. But fact: I’ve recharged it only ONCE (apart from recharging as soon as I bought it) since December 2013!

Mini works great! I had it for 2 years before I got the full-sized one.

Great comparison of the two. I’d stick with the F/S Luna even for travel.

    • August 11, 2015 / 11:30 am

Glad you enjoyed it! I think I’ll still travel with my mini just because it takes so little space, but for long vacations I’d probably bring the full-sized Luna.

  7. August 10, 2015 / 9:27 pm

I have the full size but would like a mini for travel.

    • August 11, 2015 / 11:29 am

I’ve traveled with Mini so many times now, and it was perfect for that!

I came very close to buying the mini when there was a special on it on HSN but I decided to be practical since I have and love the original. (Why did I have to be practical???)

    • August 11, 2015 / 11:29 am

Haha, the practicality strikes at the most random times 🙂 Now that I have two of them, I think having just the big one would’ve been enough.

I could go for the mini just to save a bit more space in the shower.

    • August 11, 2015 / 11:28 am

It takes so little space! I also bring it with me every time I travel.

  10. August 10, 2015 / 9:57 pm

I think I’d go big or go home! The mini would be nice if you travel a lot, though!

    • August 11, 2015 / 11:28 am

That’s what I do Brooke, I bought the Mini specifically for travel, and it hasn’t failed me.

Great comparison! I have the larger one, but think I’ll pass on the mini!

    • August 11, 2015 / 11:27 am

Thank you! I prefer the big one as well, but the Mini is a great option for someone on a budget.

  12. August 11, 2015 / 12:07 am

If I didn’t have the Luna, I’d get the mini – the price difference is a big factor, too.

    • August 11, 2015 / 11:26 am

I agree, the difference is quite substantial.

Great side by side comparison. I have the bigger one!

    • August 11, 2015 / 11:26 am

I am liking both of these, but I think I prefer the bigger one as well.

  14. August 11, 2015 / 4:54 am

I love the Luna. It’s perfect for sensitive skin.

    • August 11, 2015 / 11:25 am

Glad to hear that you like it too!

    • August 12, 2015 / 8:43 am

      It’s really a great device!

I never really considered any cleansing brush being better than my Clarisonic Mia 2, but this looks really nice! Do you prefer the Foreo Luna to a rotating cleansing brush? (Besides the fact that there are no brush heads to replace)

    • August 26, 2015 / 9:41 am

For daily use I personally prefer a standard sonic brush; my favorite is currently Michael Todd’s Soniclear. However, I always use Luna when I get hormonal acne and random redness, it gives me a nice deep clean without irritating the skin any further.
