Have you heard of spirulina*? I was first introduced to this unique superfood from watching the morning routines of several popular wellness bloggers on YouTube a few years ago but didn’t get a chance to try it myself until very recently. First thoughts? An acquired taste, for sure, but I was determined to make it work. After reading about the benefits of spirulina, I really wanted to find a way to fit it into my diet, and I may have just found the perfect recipe – a very satisfying and nourishing breakfast bowl!

This is what spirulina looks like up close.

Why spirulina?

This tiny single-cell blue-green algae is packed with nutrients! Just one tablespoon of spirulina contains 4 grams of protein, vitamins B1, B2, and B3, and an entire rainbow of minerals and microelements. Spirulina contains free radical scavengers, particularly phycocyanin, which has been studied for its immune system modulating properties* [source 1, source 2, source 3]. Because of the promising results, many dietitians now recommend spirulina to people following anti-inflammatory diets. People with intense immune reaction often have skin irritations like redness, breakouts, and fine lines, too, and if – like me – you also believe that supplements can help achieve your skin goals, then you might want to give spirulina a try*! Truth be told, I don’t even really see spirulina as a supplement, it’s basically like eating an entire whole plant, like sprouts for example. What do you think?

I won’t lie, spirulina on its own can taste very mossy, it’s literally like eating grass – not the most pleasant experience. My breakfast bowl recipe highlights the unique flavor of spirulina and turns it into a delicious treat to look forward to! I mixed in other nutrient-rich, wholesome foods to make it into a healthy snack that feels like a real indulgence. In addition to NOW Foods Organic Spirulina Powder, we’re using superfoods like Organic Matcha Green Tea Powder, Manuka Honey, blueberries, protein-rich Greek yogurt, whole grains from unsweetened muesli (you can use granola instead), plus you could also add your favorite nut butter, nuts or seeds as your healthy fats.
