Birchbox Review: October 2012 “Welcome” Box

As you know, I just cancelled my Birchbox paid subscription, cashed in my points and bought a gift subscription for myself. Everyone who receives a gift subscription gets a Welcome box instead of that month’s box, and it’s usually filled with disappointing leftovers.

I expected my box to be bad but it ended up being quite nice surprisingly. Whether it’s because I had low expectations to begin with or because the box really was pretty good, I actually liked most of the products I got.

About Birchbox:
Birchbox is a subscription service that delivers a box of luxury samples to your doorstep every month. Each box is customized to match your beauty profile to ensure you get the samples you want, you will usually get 4-5 samples and sometimes even full-sized products! The samples vary from make-up and skincare, to food and beauty accessories, and each box is carefully hand-wrapped. At $10/month Birchbox is one of the cheapest monthly beauty subscriptions out there, the value of each box usually ranges from at least $15 and can be as high as $60. They also have a nice rewards program, where for each product survey you complete you get 10 points, every 100 points earns you $10 in Birchbox credits which you can redeem in their online store for full-sized products.

1. Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner in Navy Blue
I already have one of those eyeliners in Black so I was glad to receive another color. Navy Blue is one of my favorite shades and I plan to rock it! I already use the one I have nearly every day, I love that it makes the application process so easy even for a newbie like myself.

2. Mox Botanicals Lip Butter
I already have too many lip products open right now so I will at least wait until I’m done with some of them before I start using any more. I do like the smell of this butter, it’s warm and a little fruity. I’m sure I will love using it whenever I finally get to it 🙂

3. theBalm cosmetics Mary-Lou Manizer
I really wanted to try this highlighter because I heard it’s great for contouring the face. This tiny sample is only the size of a quarter but it’s highly pigmented so a little goes a long way. It looks gorgeous no matter where I put it: cupid’s bow, cheek bones, under the browline, inner corners of the eyes just to name a few!

4. Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy La Fleur
This is another sample that I have received before. And just like I said in my previous review, I would probably love this perfume if I was still 17, it’s very fruity/flowery and reminds me of many Escada summer fragrances which I used to adore in high school. Right now I feel like I’ve grown out of it, and prefer more sensual scents — something bitter with rose, or sweet and edible like vanilla with tonka. I’m not saying I didn’t like this perfume, but it’s just not “me” anymore.

5. [Extra] Birchbox Heart-shaped Nail File

I don’t think this nail file even has a value, I recently bought a 10-count pack of Revlon nail files of similar quality and that only cost me a couple bucks. I know that I’ll never use this file so it has no value to me. I’ll end up giving it away to someone who wants it 🙂
