I totally skipped last week’s Talk To Me Tuesday, because I was just busy-busy-busy, I’m lucky I even wrote enough posts for the week. What shall we talk about today? How about splurge-worthy products for a topic?
As a beauty blogger, I have to admit [without bragging] that I do get a lot of products gratis for editorial consideration, but very often I end up purchasing them on my own. There are some things I love to buy at a discounted rate, or look for drugstore options, while others I feel like I have to splurge on. So far there were two categories of products I had to pay extra for: fragrances and skincare [especially moisturizers].
I feel like it’s very hard to find unique fragrances full of personality among less expensive brands, very often they feel too generic. Sure they probably smell good, but if I wanted to just smell nice I would simply use an inexpensive scented body lotion. As for skincare, I guess I was just brought up this way, because I don’t see any real logic behind the decision to buy fancy moisturizers and serums. Maybe I was always under the impression that you get what you pay for? Things have changed a lot in the cosmetic world over the past decade, but old habits die hard 🙂
My most recent splurges in both categories were small 1oz bottle of Atelier Cologne Vanille Insensée and a replacement bottle of Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum SPF30, since I recently ran out.
I splurge on perfume. The ones that I love always end up being rather expensive.
I know the feeling 🙁 Do you have any favorites?
I splurge on perfume and skincare too! I love YSL Parisienne (spring & summer) and Burberry Brit (fall & winter) for fragrances and Clinique skincare products.
Those two categories are so hard to resist, aren’t they? I think I sniffed magazine peels of both Parisienne and Burberry Brit, and as far as I remember, both of those fragrances were so sophisticated 🙂 As for skincare, do you also feel like we get what we pay for? Sometimes I wonder if I’m just a victim of marketing, but it really makes me feel like I’m getting a more effective product if I pay more.
I splurge on skincare! As for makeup it’s usually in that price range between drugstore and high end (wherever Urban Decay and Lipstick Queen falls). I don’t really buy fragrance but if I find something I adore I’d certainly pay for it.
I also have that perception that “you get what you pay for”. I realize that there are plenty of high quality drugstore brands and there are also a lot of drugstore duplicates for high end brands but at the same time I seem to appreciate the packaging, formulation, and consistency I tend to find in higher-end products.
Hi Amanda — I’m with you, I also prefer some of the better drugstore brands as well as mid-range makeup; I feel like there isn’t really much difference in terms of quality and pigmentation if we go into the luxe tier (Dior, Tom Ford, Chantecaille etc). I’m a total softie for cute packaging, and I may or may not have purchased sub-par products just because I loved the box 🙂
