Golden Moon Tea Premium Loose Leaf Tea Sampler Review
Due to quarantine, I found myself running out of tea at a faster rate than usual. I usually buy my tea in bulk once a year when I travel, and it lasts me until the next trip, but since traveling isn’t going to be an option anytime soon, I decided to explore loose leaf tea brands available in the US. It wasn’t much of a surprise to find out that loose leaf tea is quite expensive here. There’s simply not enough competition because there’s not enough demand. Although I like coffee, I probably drink it a few times a year at most, typically at social gatherings and restaurants where loose leaf tea is not available. Long story short, that’s how Instagram started serving me tea-related ads and it is also how I discovered Golden Moon Tea.
The ad that swayed me promised a generously-sized Golden Moon 3 Tea Sampler for just $3. What’s the catch? None, really, except that you also have to pay $4.95 for shipping which isn’t totally outrageous. Each package contains enough tea to make about 12 cups, and you can brew another cup using the same leaves, making it 24 cups per bag, so 72 cups of high-quality tea for a few bucks. When I thought about it, this deal seemed too good to be true, but it turned out to be legit!
Golden Moon Tea tea blends don’t contain “natural flavoring” that is often present in flavored teas. Natural flavoring, when used within regulations, is not necessarily toxic, but it is a shortcut to avoid an often time-consuming process of flavoring tea leaves with raw ingredients. Typically, tea blends that don’t rely on natural flavoring are considered to be of higher quality. This is why Golden Moon Teaselection doesn’t have some popular teas, like peach or raspberry, because they would be impossible to create without using natural flavoring. They have a lot of other awesome blends though, and the sampler set contains three of their best-selling ones: English Breakfast, Masala Chai, and Moroccan Mint.
Golden Moon Tea English Breakfast
English Breakfast ($3.99+) – Smooth yet bold, this black tea was perfect to start the day with and I really enjoyed the blend. It’s not too bitter or too acidic so it’s easier on the tummy than coffee, plus it makes a good companion to breakfast foods, whether you have a full spread or a cup of yogurt. This tea blend consists of four distinct black teas to create a unique aroma and smooth flavor profile: malty Assam, spicy second-flush Darjeeling, aromatic Nilgiri, and smoky Keemun.
Ingredients: Organic Black Tea.
Golden Moon Tea Masala Chai
Masala Chai ($3.99+) is what Americans call “chai tea”. When I first saw it on the menu at a restaurant right after coming to the US, I was super confused, because “chai” literally means “tea”. What’s a “tea tea” anyway, is it some kind of a double blend I was not aware of? Nope, chai tea turned out to be a budget-friendly imitation of masala chai, a spiced tea variety sold in India on every street corner. It’s actually pretty difficult to get a cup of real masala chai in the US, as most of the big popular tea companies use shortcuts, like artificial flavorings, cheaper black tea base, or sometimes even black tea dust, and bulk ground spices instead of whole buds and kernels. Don’t get me wrong, it still tastes decent if you add lots of whipped cream and syrup on top, but nowhere near as good as the real deal. Golden Moon Tea makes their masala chai blend properly by using all-organic ingredients and whole spices, without skimping on quality, and the resulting tea is absolutely mind-blowing! I tried it plain, with cream & sweetener, and over ice, and it turned out delicious every time.
Ingredients: Organic Black Tea, Organic Cinnamon, Organic Ginger, Organic Cardamom Pods, Organic Clove Buds, Organic Pepper.
Golden Moon Tea Moroccan Mint
Moroccan Mint ($3.99+) is a traditional tea blend from Morocco that you are supposed to drink with sugar. Even served hot, this tea has a refreshing quality that makes you feel instantly cooler thanks to a generous helping of mint. This was my husband’s favorite tea in this sampler, and I enjoyed it as well. When brewed at the recommended temperature with a little bit of sugar, it resulted in a smooth, almost candy-like flavor and perfectly minty aftertaste. Forget the breath mints, sip on this tea instead!
Ingredients: Organic Green Tea, Organic Spearmint.
