Paul & Joe Beaute Summer 2020 Swatches & Review
The new Le coin ensoleillé collection for Summer 2020 from Paul & Joe Beaute is out! It’s been out for a few weeks now, actually, but I only recently had the opportunity to try everything. Today I am excited to share the first look at these adorable products, plus we’ll talk about their performance as well. After all, no matter how cute, if a formula doesn’t perform well, it’s not worth it, right?
As always, Paul & Joe Beaute gets A+ for packaging. Despite the quirky vintage appearance, each design is impeccably made: the prints all align perfectly, and there are no rough or uneven edges that give away cheaply made packaging. Even the outer cardboard boxes are of high quality! Also worth noting that all the products are made in Japan with the utmost care and attention to detail.
EYE SHADOW:
The collection includes five new limited edition shades of Sparkling Eye Color ($28) cream eye shadows, and I got to try four of them:
- 001 Sieste d’un chat – taupe with olive green
- 002 Il Fait Beau – sky blue and pale yellow
- 003 Spoiled cat – bronze brown and peachy pink
- 005 Ronron – golden yellow and bronze
Sparkling Eye Color eye shadows are intended to be applied with your fingers, although I had good results using a flat dense synthetic brush as well. The new summer shades are all duos with complementary colors that can be worn separately or together. Personally, I found it difficult to apply individual shades on their own without swirling at least some of it together on accident. The longevity is similar to the other Sparkling Eye Color shades I tried in the fall. If I pat on a sheer wash of color, they stay on the lids pretty well in a non-humid environment. For more opaque coverage I recommend applying an eye primer, otherwise, these tend to crease pretty badly because the formula is somewhat moisturizing and never really sets on the skin.
LIPSTICK:
We got three new shades of Lipstick L ($29), where L stands for limited edition shades. I received two of them to try:
- 004 Soleil d’Ete – clear yellow and warm orange-red heart
- 006 Lumiere du soleil – clear with multicolor glitter and warm reddish-brown heart
I couldn’t decide what to make of these – are they lipsticks, lip balms, or a bit of both? Just like the eye shadows, these juicy new lippies have two layers. On the outside, we have a clear gel-like shell, and on the inside – a cat-shaped full-color creamy lipstick. Unlike typical Paul & Joe lipstick refills, the Summer lipsticks already in elegant reusable cases. Also, instead of limited edition cardboard packaging, the summer collection features a more permanent plastic material instead. Plus, it’s summer, and you might want to bring your lipstick to the beach or the pool and it would be a shame to ruin your case with water, right?
New Lipstick L shades perform as you’d expect from any balmy lip product – they feel like a tinted lip balm and perform like it, too. On my lips, both shades last about 2-3 hours without eating or drinking before I need to reapply, which is pretty consistent with most creamy lipsticks. Also worth noting that the formula has a neroli aftertaste/scent, so if you avoid fragrance in cosmetics, that is definitely something to keep in mind.
MIRROR:
It’s no secret how much I love Paul & Joe makeup mirrors. They are always so beautifully crafted and are an absolute pleasure to use. The new Makeup Mirror 001 ($21) is no exception. Shaped like a kitty head, this lightweight Neko mirror is wrapped in water-resistant fabric that makes it easy to toss into your beach or gym bag. It’s about as wide as a big makeup palette, but a lot slimmer and lighter.
This clear non-magnifying mirror opens up like a book and has a little ridge so you can set it down on the table or in your lap, and use both of your hands instead of having to hold it all the time. The height/angle is not adjustable due to the fact that the flap is made with soft material.
Paul & Joe Beaute products can be purchased at Beautyhabit and on Amazon.
