Target Beauty Bag: Fall 2012

Target introduced their last ever beauty bag. I was sad to hear that there won’t be any more of them, but with all the drama and entitlement that always followed the previous beauty bag giveaways I can kinda see why they chose to drop the idea all together.

This season the bag comes packed with mostly hair care products, but for me the best part was the bag itself. I thought the animal print was fun and very season appropriate.

L’Oreal EverCreme Shampoo, Conditioner and Masque
Well, I’ve had better results with many other sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners so I probably won’t be purchasing this one. First of all, anyone who has ever used a sulfate-free shampoo would be really surprised to see how this one creates rich and foamy lather. So of course that got me a little suspicious, and I looked at the ingredients and noticed that Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate is one of the main ingredients. After some googling I came up with the following description:

“Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate is derived from coconut and palm oils; a safe skin friendly surfactant for both skin and hair. This mild plant derived surfactant creates a rich, luxurious lather that effectively removes suface oil, dirt and bacteria, without drying the skin. Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate is also hydrophillic, that means it is attracted to water which enables it to dissolve more readily thus providing superior rinseablility. “

So I guess it’s safe? Although I’m not completely convinced, so I won’t be using it again for sure. The conditioner and masque did an “OK” job at moisturizing and detangling my hair, and yet again I feel like there are much better products out there within the same price range.

Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy Total Care Nourishing Daily Shampoo & Conditioner
This duo is sulfate-rich but provides much better conditioning than L’Oreal did. I feel like Clear products have been everywhere lately so there isn’t much I can add to what’s already been said. If you use sulfate containing shampoos then this would be a good one to try.

Jergens Daily Moisture Dry Skin Moisturizer
My mother-in-law uses this lotion every day and swears by it. I occasionally use it too, but it’s not my favorite. I think it’s great value for the price, and I would recommend using it in the evening because it can feel a little greasy. There are scented and unscented variations, I prefer the former one because I can be too sensitive to some fragrances.

Fekkai Shea Butter Moisturizing Shampoo & Conditioner
It contains a small amount of Cetrimonium Methosulfate and although this ingredient ends in ‘sulfate’ it is used as a conditioning agent in hair products and is not a color-stripping ingredient like most sulfates. So I assumed it was safe to use, and ended up liking the end result. Fekkai products are on the pricey end of the drugstore brands and I can see why. I like most of their products because they provide my hair with just the right amount of moisture so it doesn’t get dry or lay flat.

Pixi Flawless Beauty Primer
I actually own a bottle of this primer. I use it either for highlighting certain areas like cheekbones or mixing it with my foundation for the fresh dewy look. I gave this sample away to a family member who always wanted to try it. Hope she likes it as much as I do 🙂

The cosmetic bag itself!
It’s made by SOHO and comes in a sturdy water resistant material with a fun animal print. I carry it around every day and it’s always easy to spot in my bottomless purse.
