Supergoop! Acai Fusion Lip Balm SPF 30 Review

I don’t know about you, but I always found it hard to find a lip product with high SPF and good ingredients that didn’t cost an arm and a leg, so when I spotted this tube of Supergoop! Acai Fusion Lip Balm SPF 30 my heart almost skipped a beat. I’ve been a huge fan of Supergoop! products, and some of them are probably on my forever repurchase list. Naturally, I expected great things from this lip balm, and at only $8.50 a pop it would make a very affordable staple, if it worked well. Let’s see if I liked it!

Supergoop! says that “with the strength of acai superberry, this lip balm hydrates, repairs, protects, and soothes. Enriched with moisturizing shea butter to lock in hydration and provide a protective barrier from not only the sun, but also environmental damage that can wreak havoc on the delicate skin of the lips. And if that wasn’t enough, its sheer pink tint makes lip color unnecessary.” Sounds promising!

First of all, the name is misleading, as there is no actual acai extract anywhere on the ingredient list. Supergoop! commented that the acai part was a reference to the color, but they are working on re-formulating these lip balms to actually include the extract. We should see the new and improved formula hit the stores around Spring 2015.

Another “con” [at least to me it is] is petrolatum being the first ingredient. I try to avoid accidentally ingesting too much of it, but in this case willing to compromise, because to be honest, this lip balm feels amazing on the lips. It’s very moisturizing, buttery, and emollient, and goes on very smooth, providing barely-there pink tint and subtle shine, without looking greasy. The aftertaste, however, is totally yucky! It’s very biter, and tastes like I just ate some liquid plastic or something; a very unpleasant feeling, to say the least. Note to self: gotta be careful with this one.

Supergoop! Acai Fusion Lip Balm SPF 30 Review | via @glamorable #bbloggers #beauty #lipbalm #spf #supergoop #acai #lipsWhile Supergoop! is known for their magical formulas using physical sunscreens, this lip balm only contains sun-blocking chemicals, like Avobenzone, Octinoxate, and Octisalate. Considering that all of us lick our lips from time to time, this is a better choice, since chemical sunscreens will get absorbed into the skin and provide protection even if the lip balm is smudged, while physical sunscreens are present only on the surface [once they’re rubbed off, your skin is fully exposed to UV rays again].

Do you need this? If you are searching for a good lip balm with high broad spectrum SPF, this might be what you are looking for. It has moisturizing, non-sticky formula that plays well with other lip products, and it’s also affordable. From the cons I have to mention bad aftertaste, misleading ingredients, and mineral oil, but that didn’t deter me from continuing to use it on a daily basis. It’s hands down the best lip balm with SPF I have used.

I thought this one actually contained acai extract. I hate products with misleading names :S

My favorite lip balm with SPF is Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25. It is extremely moisturizing and has no perceptible taste. It has a lower SPF but its good enough for me especially since most other lip balms have no sun protection. This one is also relatively cheap, $7.50 in Sephora and Bloomingdales.

Sounds awesome and very moisturizing indeed.

I think I’d rather use a lipstick – the color should provide some physical barrier to the sun. I don’t like my lip products to be bitter!

Hmm the aftertaste would be a turn-off for me

The pros and cons kind of make it a hard decision but I also bought this and just haven’t tried it yet.
