Starlooks Starbox Unboxing and Review: March 2013

Another month, another Starbox… Unfortunately for me, Starlooks decided to drop the idea of rotating the box contents between bolds, mixed and neutrals based on the feedback they received, so from now on the boxes will be a complete surprise, just like they used to be.

This month’s theme is “Blue” and based on the look book I kind of figured that we’d be getting some kind of a blue eye product, either an eye shadow or an eyeliner. I was right about that, but at the same time I was terrified because blue is as far as it can get outside of my comfort zone.

Sadly, I have to take a break from Starbox, because as it appears I have way too much makeup. I know, there is no such thing as “too much makeup”, but when I was moving (for the second time in 9 months) I had to pack several XL boxes full of makeup, and many the products were still in their original retail packaging. So although it pains me to do so, I emailed Starlooks CS to cancel my subscription for the time being. Hopefully I can use up some of my stash so I won’t feel guilty for resubscribing later this year.

Matte Eye Shadow in i277 Disarray
The container looks different on the website, but I think this eye shadow is full-sized. Either way, it’s BLUE! It was my ultimate OMG what do I do with this item from this box, and you know what I normally do with eye shadow colors that I’m unsure about? Correct, I turn them into an eyeliner until I feel confident enough to use them as intended. Disarray is not your traditional blue, it’s more of a gray-blue, but it definitely looks more indigo in the pictures. The application is fantastic, and the formula is rich, creamy and pigmented.

Lengthening Mascara in mc01 Black
This mascara is at least twice heavier than the rest of mine, and tube itself is bigger than most of them, too. The wand is big and fluffy, and the stopper perfectly measures the amount of product that goes on your lashes. After six coats I still didn’t have a single clump and my lashes looked longer and fuller while still maintaining the healthy natural look. This is not a false lash effect mascara, on the contrary it makes your lashes look naturally full, long, and defined.

Lipstick in Flutter
This is another color I wasn’t too sure about, since coppers usually look a bit strange on me, but I actually liked the end result. For the day look I dabbed the lipstick lightly on my lips and spread it with my finger. It’s very pigmented and one swipe is enough for the finished look.

[Extra] Lip Sugar in Vanilla
I’m so excited about this scrub! I hated to pay tens of dollars for LUSH and Sara Happ, and now Starlooks is coming out with this cheap yet effective alternative. The best part? It smells and tastes like butter cookies 🙂

The look
And to wrap up this review, here’s a little daytime look I threw together. I’m wearing the eye shadow as a winged eyeliner, and the lipstick was gently patted on to get the natural look. My lashes are coated with 4 layers of mascara, yet they still look natural and a little undone.
Other products used: Missha Perfect Cover BB cream in #21; Yaby eye shadow in Seashell; MiA BelleZZa Mineral Blush in Captive Glow.

Product Swatches:
  1. The look
  2. Lengthening Mascara in mc01 Black
  3. Swatch of Lengthening Mascara in mc01 Black
  4. Matte Eye Shadow in i277 Disarray
  5. Lipstick in Flutter

  7. Swatch of Matte Eye Shadow in i277 Disarray

And here is what I liked the most and the least (it was a very tough call to make because, again, Starlooks products are very high quality):

  • The best: Lengthening mascara, of course, for the natural look and great clump-free formula.
  • The worst: The lipstick was just a little gritty, but that’s the case for pretty much any sparkly shade, so it was kind of expected.

The verdict: It’s no secret that I loved the previous box better than this one, mainly because every single item was very “me”. Nonetheless, Starbox is a perfect subscription for any makeup lover, since all of the products are full-sized, and most importantly current, aka you won’t see discontinued colors from 6 seasons ago.
