Square Hue Unboxing, Swatches and Review: November 2013 – The Coastal Collection

Purchased by Me

With the recent flop of a certain nail subscription [flop is a gross understatement btw] I found myself a bit polish-deprived, so I researched a few services and decided to try out Square Hue. Mainly, my decision was based on the fact that I don’t have to jump through the hoops to skip or cancel – both options are available in my account dashboard. That, and I really liked the November spoiler picture.

HOW IT WORKS
Every month for $21/month subscribers receive a limited edition collection of 3 carefully curated season-appropriate nail polish colors. Each month has a distinct personality to suit a variety of dress needs. Day or evening, casual or luxe, Square Hue got you covered. Quick drying “5-Free” Clean formula does not contain Formaldehyde, Toluene, DBP, Camphor or Formaldehyde Resin. Square Hue donates a portion of the proceeds to charity.

This month Square Hue is taking us on a trip to coastal towns of Chatham, Nantucket and Portsmouth, and each color was inspired by unique features of these lovely harbors.

The first polish is called Nantucket – it’s a beautiful muted medium blueish teal creme. The formula was very smooth and the pigmentation was great, if you have a steady hand it’s easily a one-coater. Because it’s so pigmented, it did stain my nails a bit and the skin around them when I was taking it off, so next time I’ll make sure to use a thicker layer of base coat while wearing and some Vaseline when removing.

The second polish was inspired by the town of Chatham, and resulted in this light brown milk chocolate creme color. The formula was the thinnest of the three and I needed three coats for full opacity, but this is probably going to be my most used color from the Coastal collection.

Last but not least, we have Portsmouth – a muted sky blue creme with a bit of gray. Just like Nantucket, it was nicely pigmented and could be applied in one coat. In the picture I’m wearing two just to add some extra thickness to my thin nails.

THE VERDICT
I’m glad that I got to try Square Hue, it’s exactly what I look for in a polish subscription, and the formulas are spot on. Chatham was my favorite color of the three, even though all of them are unique and fabulous in their own way. We do have a spoiler for December – the theme is Passport Collection: New York. It’s safe to assume that the polishes will be inspired by the Big Apple, and I’m predicting a shimmery or glittery yellow (maybe even gold), a shimmery purple, and Lady Liberty-inspired green creme.

Have you tried Square Hue? What do you think about the November polishes?

Chatham is definitely my favorite … but I’m thinking I’m going to save my sub money for the weekly $10 specials that I get offered through Butter LONDON’s Bezzie Mates emails. I don’t have any at the moment but I took your adviced and reinvested my refund money in Deborah Lippmann’s. I seem to never go wrong when I buy one of her colors!

Those $10 specials sound very tempting, indeed! I hope you love your new DL polishes, you should post swatches on MUT if you can 🙂

You know, I actually avoided them when they first started because I felt like I just don’t need more polish. Now that the nail subscription I had high hopes for pretty much collapsed, I felt that I could at least try a difference service. So far based on this first box, I’m pretty impressed, but I’m aware that they tend to send a lot of blues and yellows.

If my nails looked at gorgeous as yours I’d be painting them a lot more often! Love those colors!

I am serious! Those shades perfectly convey the pictures beside them! I am amazed! I am not even huge into polish but this service looks impressive!

I know, right? I was kind of skeptical, because they just sound almost “too good” to be true. Five-free formula? Check. Donating to charity? Check. Reliable billing/shipping cycle? Check. Unique LE colors? Check.

All in all, based on my first impression I’d say it’s a pretty nice subscription service for a nail polish junkie 🙂
