Are Origins Body Care Products Worth the Splurge?

Origins has been around for a while now. Founded by the son of the legendary Estee Lauder, the brand was one of the original few under the Estee Lauder umbrella. Although Origins was always well-loved, these days the brand is more popular than ever. I think a major reason for that is their collaborations with influencers in the recent years. Personally, I was inspired to re-discover Origins thanks to one of the bloggers I follow, and I think this is true for many others, too.

Now that I have the opportunity to be one of those brand influencers myself, I wanted to introduce you to products you might have otherwise not known about. Many of you probably heard about the famous GinZing line, or the products made in collaboration with Dr. Weil, but Origins bath & body care lines are not as well-known.

Gloomaway Grapefruit Body Wash & Bubble Bath Review, Pros, Cons, Ingredients - Is it worth the price?

Origins Gloomaway Grapefruit Body Wash & Bubble Bath shows pH 6.0 when mixed with my tap water. Not bad!

While some people will think it’s totally nuts to spend over $5 on a bottle of body wash, Origins Gloomaway Grapefruit Body Wash & Bubble Bath ($25 for 6.7 fl oz) is a nice treat especially for dehydrated winter skin. I say that because my pH testing strips measure the acidity levels at around 6.0, which is almost gentle enough to be a facial cleanser! In fact, many brands sell facial cleansers way harsher than that and people love those. At pH6.0 the body wash cleanses the skin of impurities without disturbing its protective acid mantle, leaving the body feeling fresh, clean, and soft without drying it out.

The grapefruit fragrance was a lot more subtle than I had hoped, so if you are looking for a bold citrusy scent, this would not be the right product. I still like it a lot, because it’s pleasant but not invasive, and I can actually use it on the days when I have a migraine without worsening the symptoms.

Gloomaway Grapefruit Body Wash & Bubble Bath Review, Pros, Cons, Ingredients - Is it worth the price?

Origins Gloomaway Grapefruit Body Wash & Bubble Bath comes in a tall squeeze tube.

I briefly noticed that some people mentioned being unhappy with the packaging. Apparently, there is a batch circulating out there with a plastic cap that is too hard to open, and the opening so small it makes it impossible to squeeze out any product. That is absolutely not the case with my tube, and I would not even have known about the issues if I didn’t catch a glimpse of another customer’s review on the website when I went to look for the ingredient list.

You will LOVE it if:

  • You like to splurge on body products.
  • You prefer low pH face and body cleansers.
  • You like milder, more subtle scents.
  • You prefer products made with lots of natural ingredients.
  • You have dry or dehydrated flaky skin.

You will HATE it if:

  • You dislike the tube packaging for body washes and prefer tall bottles or pumps instead.
  • You prefer all-natural skincare.
  • You do physical work outdoors and need an alkaline body wash or soap to wash off the grime [motor oil, mud, street dirt etc].
  • You are on a budget.
  • You are looking for a bold, zingy citrus fragrance.
  • You avoid sulfates in your cleansing products.
  • You only support cruelty-free brands.
  • You are sensitive to any of the ingredients.

Whipped Body Cream Ginger Souffle, Whipped Body Cream Smoothing Souffle Review, Cons, Pros, Ingredients - Are they worth the price?

Origins Whipped Body Cream Ginger Souffle ($35 for 6.7 oz) is one of the brand’s bestsellers, and rightfully so. The formula is mostly natural, and the texture is simply out of this world. This rich cream feels like clouds when applied to the skin, and immediately softens any dry and rough spots. It sinks in right away, leaving a veil of comfortable velvety moisture without a hint of stickiness. The fragrance is strong but not particularly girly, so this body moisturizer can be enjoyed by all members of the family. It smells like citrusy gingerbread but without the sweet and sugary notes, if that makes sense. It’s a yummy scent that is also gender-neutral.

You will LOVE it if:

  • You like to splurge on body products.
  • You love the smell of ginger and citrus fruits.
  • You prefer whipped body creams.
  • You hate sticky body lotions.
  • You avoid parabens, mineral oil, artificial colors and fragrances.
  • You love products made with lots of natural ingredients.
  • You have normal, combination, dry or dehydrated flaky skin.

You will HATE it if:

  • You avoid jar packaging.
  • You prefer all-natural skincare.
  • You are on a budget.
  • You like milder, more subtle scents.
  • You have oily skin.
  • You only support cruelty-free brands.
  • You are sensitive to any of the ingredients.

Ingredients: Water, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Butylene Glycol, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Oil*, Elettaria Cardamomum Seed Oil*, Coriandrum Sativum (Coriander) Fruit Oil*, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil*, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Bud Oil*, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Oil*, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil*, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil*, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil*, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil*, Litsea Cubeba Fruit Oil*, Eugenol, Linalool, Citronellol, Citral, Limonene, Geraniol, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Peg-100 Stearate, Ethylhexyl Hydroxystearate, Glyceryl Stearate, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Tribehenin, Caprylic/Capric/Myristic/Stearic Triglyceride, Squalane, Hexylene Glycol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Polysorbate 60, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Potassium Hydroxide, Stearyl Alcohol, Isostearic Acid, Stearic Acid, Dimethicone, Carbomer, Caprylyl Glycol, Disodium Edta, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Phenoxyethanol. *Essential Oil

Origins Whipped Body Cream Smoothing Souffle ($35 for 6.7 oz) is another gender-neutral body cream option for the whole family. This is more of a cooling, summery scent that features notes of spearmint, peppermint, orange, and rosemary. It is definitely not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, because to some it may smell like toothpaste. I personally find the it refreshing and perfect for the warm weather. The formula feels more lightweight than the Ginger Souffle above, so it can work for all skin types.

You will LOVE it if:

  • You like to splurge on body products.
  • You love the smell of peppermint.
  • You prefer whipped body creams.

Origins Precipitation Continuous Moisture Recovery for Body Review, Pros, Cons, Ingredients - Is it worth the price?

Origins Precipitation Continuous Moisture Recovery for Body comes in a tall plastic pump bottle and doesn’t require much counter space.

Origins Precipitation Continuous Moisture Recovery for Body ($30 for 8.5 fl oz) is what I have in mind when I think about a body moisturizer – a white runny milky lotion with a very subtle powdery fragrance that will not interfere with my perfume if I decide to wear any that day. This classic formula is a universal crowd pleaser. It comes in a tall bottle with a hygienic pump dispenser, and doesn’t take up much space on the counter.

The texture reminds me of a cleansing milk. It spreads over the skin easily and sinks in right away, leaving no trace of residue behind. This lotion is fairly lightweight, so it’s suitable for people with oilier complexions or for the summer months. I would not recommend it to someone looking for intense moisture and nourishment, as it’s nowhere close to the effects of the Ginger Souffle.

Because it’s hygienically packaged, I sometimes keep it in the shower so I can apply it immediately after cleansing my body while the skin is still damp to seal in the moisture. However, in general it’s not a good idea to store your skincare in a warm and humid environment, like your shower caddy, because it can destabilize the formula. I only keep mine there for short periods of time, maybe for a day or two at the most, and then move it to a dark, cool and dry cabinet with the rest of the body products.

You will LOVE it if:

  • You like to splurge on body products.
  • You prefer milder, more subtle scents.
  • You hate sticky body lotions.
  • You like the hygienic pump packaging.
  • You avoid parabens, mineral oil, artificial colors and fragrances.
  • You love products made with lots of natural ingredients.
  • You have normal, combination, or oily skin.
  • You are looking for a warm weather body lotion.

You will HATE it if:

  • You prefer all-natural skincare.
  • You are on a budget.
  • You prefer bold fragrances.
  • You have dry skin.
  • You only support cruelty-free brands.
  • You are sensitive to any of the ingredients.

I used to love going to the Origins store to discover new products. It was also in some department stores but now I never see the brand.

    • January 27, 2018 / 2:29 pm

Yes! I remember going to their counter at Macy’s, but seems like these days nobody even shops there anymore. I mean Macy’s, not Origins 🙂

I’m surprised that more brands don’t have grapefruit lines. It’s such a nice scent, isn’t it?

  11. January 26, 2018 / 1:29 pm

I tried a serum from them that I really liked, but on the other hand had a couple of lotions that I wasn’t a fan of.
