Maybelline Baby Lips Electro Lip Balm Pink Shock Swatches, Pictures and Review

I tried Baby Lips when they first came out a few years ago, and I must have bought the wrong variety [peach], because I absolutely hated it. When Baby Lips Electro in Pink Shock arrived on my desk I was a bit hesitant to use it, because my first experience was quite negative. I’m glad I gave it a second try, because this time around I was pleased with the result.

Maybelline Baby Lips Electro Lip Balm in “Pink Shock”

Baby Lips Electro is a Limited Edition collection that includes six neon shades: Strike A Rose [coral pink], Minty Sheer [neon celery green], Berry Bomb [lilac], Fierce ‘N Tangy [neon lemon yellow], Pink Shock [neon rose pink], and Oh! Orange! [true bright orange]. All of them are lightly scented with different fragrances, and you can kind of guess what each one is going to smell like. For example, Minty Sheer smells like mint, and Pink Shock smells like raspberries.

Maybelline claims that these lip balms “protect and moisturize for a full 8 hours”, making the lips “visibly renewed in 1 week”, let’s see if that’s really the case.

The formula is something between creamy and gel-like, and feels buttery during application. I don’t hate that, but from certain angles it makes my lips look greasy. According to various blogs, the pigmentation varies from shade to shade, and Pink Shock is one of the more pigmented colors in this mini-collection. I have naturally light lips, so the color of lipsticks and lip glosses shows up really well. For instance, when I compare my swatch to other swatches online, it really looks like we’re not even using the same product!

The promised longevity of 8 hours was hard to test, because honestly who doesn’t eat or drink for 8 hours straight? I made it to 6 hours, and I can tell you that the tint was still there [barely], but the sheen was completely gone. So, at least on me, Baby Lips Electro lip balm fell short of its promise to last 8 hours.

I also want to point out that while these lip balms feel buttery on the lips, they are not very moisturizing. The balmy feeling is due to petrolatum in the formula [which I try to be very careful with, especially in lip products], and it’s not a moisturizer, but rather a protective foil. In my experience, petroleum-based lip balms improve the condition of the lips, but only visually. Once removed, your lips will quickly revert back to being dry and chapped, so if you want to actually make them better, you’d better use lip exfoliants and products with lanolin or high shea butter content.

THE VERDICT
Despite the claims to last 8 hours, Baby Lips Electro lip balm lasted about 6, and that’s considering I wasn’t eating or drinking during this time. The remainder of pink pigment was still somewhat visible, but the buttery sheen was completely gone, making my lips look lightly tinted, but dry. Pink Shock shade is pleasantly pigmented, and can even compete with Maybelline Color Whisper lipsticks in terms of coverage and overall feel on the lips.
