Love With Food Unboxing and Review: May 2013

Oh my, I completely forgot to review the May box! I swear, I thought I did, but today I got shipping for my June box and a little bubble lit up above my head saying “Wait a minute… June????” The theme last month was “Breakfast in Bed” and, of course, Mother’s day related. Or so they say, because I found a few snack choices a bit odd, considering the occasion. So here it is, my shamelessly belated May box review!
P.S.: These pictures have my old watermarks on them because I took them several weeks ago. Yup, FAIL!

Bonne Maman Strawberry Preserves
I already received this sample in my March Goodies box, and I still haven’t tried it. Like I said in my other review, I’m just not a huge fan of preserves so I veeeery rarely use them for cooking, and even less often eat them. At least it kind of went with the Breakfast in Bed theme, unlike some other products in the box.

Purchase: No

Snapz Premium Sliced Tomato Crunch
These are literally thinly sliced dried tomatoes. Not only they just tasted plain weird, there was nothing “Mother’s Day” or “Breakfast in Bed” about them at all. The taste was average, verging on bland, and I wished I would just eat a regular tomato instead.
Overall: 2/5
Purchase: No

Mrs. May’s Pumpkin Crunch
I’m not a fan of pumpkin seeds, or seeds in general, so for me this snack tasted pretty average. However, the quality seems really good, and looks like a gourmet snack on the outside. So although I can’t appreciate the flavor, I’m still going to rate this snack pretty high.
Overall: 4/5
Purchase: No

The Cookie Department Great Full Vegan Sweet Potato Cookie
The cookie was big and soft, but veeeery sweet. I’m not a lover of traditional super-sweet cookies and cakes, and always take the frosting off my cupcakes and oreos, so it’s not surprising that I didn’t like it as much.
Overall: 3/5
Purchase: No

Bali’s Best Coffee Candy
I loved this coffee candy, it was just bitter enough and just sweet enough for me to want more than one at a time, which normally never happens. Great quality and great price!
Overall: 5/5
Purchase: Yes

Biscotti Bari Authentic Almond Biscotti
These biscotti were wayyy too dry for me, and didn’t really taste much like almonds at all. At first I was a bit confused to what they are, because they didn’t taste like any other biscotti I’ve tried before. And the package got damaged during the shipping, so there were crumbs everywhere.
Overall: 3.5/5
Purchase: No

Caffe Borsa Single Serve Hand Drip Coffee
I like the concept of having access to freshly brewed coffee even without the access to a coffeemaker. This coffee blend is 100% single origin Sumatra mandehling Arabica (whatever that means).
Overall: 4.5/5
Purchase: Yes

Slap Ya Mama Cajun Seasoning
Nothing screams “Mother’s Day” louder than a Slap Ya Mama product… I mean, seriously? Just because it says “Mama” on the label, doesn’t mean it fits the theme. Ok, maybe I’m waaaay overthinking this.. I do like spices though, so I’ll give it a try. It’s a traditional blend of salt, black and red peppers, and garlic, that I use in a lot of recipes.
Overall: 4/5
Purchase: Yes

The verdict: As you could see, most of the items in this box didn’t quite work for me. However, since it’s a food subscription, it wouldn’t be fair to badmouth the May box just because some products weren’t suited for my personal weird taste, especially since everything seemed to be pretty high quality. However, two items didn’t quite fit the Breakfast in Bed theme, and were an overall odd choice for this selection. Looking forward to my June box!

    Hi Anastasia,

I just wanted to comment on the “Slap Your Mama” product, hee hee. “Slap Your Mama” is a Southern U.S. saying that refers to something (Usually food) that tastes so good or is so good, you’ll want to “Slap your Mama”.

I’m originally from the NorthEast and when I moved down South and heard this saying, I thougth the person was out of their mind! Then they explained what it meant. Regional stuff 😛

Also, I was checking out that tomato product. It would be a nice twist for a salad but I was thinking that it could be used in quiche. Quiche is breakfast/brunch food. Good for Sundays, or Mother’s Day ;).

I don’t know if I would buy this box but after the downfall of Goodies, I’m foodie box shy. And yeah, I noticed the reappearance of the strawberry preserves. They’re sold at any grocery store I go to, so I wouldn’t be jazzed to see that in my box.

      Hi Terrah,

Thanks for the clarification on the “Slap Ya Mama” thing, I would have never guessed in a million years that it could mean “tastes good”. Regional phrases are so fun to learn! 🙂

As for the dried tomatoes, I’m sure these can be used in many different ways, but honestly, to me they tasted really bland, and I would rather top my salad with fresh ones.

I personally wouldn’t subscribe to LWF either, but I won a 6-month subscription, and that’s the only reason I keep getting these boxes. However, it’s technically a foodie (I use the term loosely, because of the overflow of easily accessible walmarty foods) subscription and charity in one, since they donate a meal to a food bank with each box sent, and to some that alone is worth it.

Thank you for such an awesome comment, and I hope you have a wonderful day 🙂

I love the packaging and variety in Love with Food and the fact that they give meals to food banks. They also highlight some great local businesses. These are totally worth it in my opinion!
