Ipsy Unboxing and Review: May 2013

Oh Ipsy, you just keep luring me in every time I get unhappy and unsubscribe! This month I got sucked back in after seeing Zoya spoilers, then after the rest of the possible items have been confirmed I opened a second subscription. There are enough variations so my chances of not getting duplicates are fairly high.

About Ipsy:
Each month subscribers will receive a new Glam Bag with deluxe samples and full-sized beauty products customized according to your beauty profile. Members can watch and play along with the stylists with the same products that they are using, all for only $10 a month.

Zoya Nail Polish in Piaf
Zoya nail polish is the reason I resubscribed to Ipsy, and part of the reason I bought a second bag. I know some people dreaded receiving a yellow nail polish, but I knew I would have been happy with any of them. This cute baby-chick shade Piaf belongs in the Lovely Spring-2013 collection and is best described as a beautiful opaque yellow metallic with cool undertones.

Yaby Concealer Refill in Pecan
Pecan is so not the color I would have picked for myself, but it can be repurposed for face contouring, used as an eye shadow or an eye shadow base, and even as a natural-looking blush. I don’t plan on doing any of that, I’ll just give it away 🙂

Pacifica Roll-on Perfume in Tahitian Gardenia
I liked this fragrance more than I thought I would. I do like gardenia as an element in my perfumes, but not when it’s the main note. When I first opened the rollerball I could very clearly smell the gardenia, and it was almost overpowering. But when I actually applied it to my wrist I instantly smelled a strong citrusy “breeze”, and suddenly this fragrance went from mature to cute, flirty and very summery! The staying power is very nice, too, but that part is always individual and is mostly based your body chemistry. This particular scent lingered on my skin for nearly 6 hours!

Juice Beauty Reflecting Gloss in Pink
This lip gloss is very lightweight and feels very comfortable on the lips. Despite being packed with shimmery particles, it’s surprisingly non-gritty. I primed my lips with a concealer for this swatch, so you can clearly see the actual color of the gloss. On top of it all it smells nice and almost “edibly” fruity.

Pacifica Luminizing Body Butter
Thank you Ipsy fairies for not sending me the body bronzer! This gorgeous shimmer looks fantastic on my fair skin, and beautifully glimmers in the sun. The buttery texture smells like a coconut cake frosting, and now I’m hungry for one.

  • The best: Pacifica roll-on for its fantastic floral fragrance.
  • The worst: Yaby concealer, simply because the color is too dark for me.

The verdict: I’m more than pleased with this month’s Glam Bag, and I never would have thought that a day would come when I decide to subscribe to a second Ipsy bag. I hope it’s not just a one-time occurrence, and this is what our future Glam Bags will look like every month!

Ah your items look great! I wish I got those… I’m supposed to be getting the Mini Clear Brow Gel and a lipstick. I have no idea what to do with a brow gel but I guess I’ll try it. I indicated that I never wear lipstick so I wish they had noted that and sent me lip gloss instead. :-/ Hope I get that shade of nail polish too! 🙂

      Hi Mary!

I read that the lipsticks are sheer, so you might be safe there! The brow gel can be used as a mascara base, or you can mix it with different colored eye shadows to create your custom-made mascara colors if you’re into that 🙂

that is a great idea for the brow gel!!! 🙂

I actually followed my own advice and used it as a mascara by mixing it with dark blue matte eye shadow. Worked like a charm!

Your pictures are beautiful as always! I laughed at loud at the “I don’t plan on doing any of that, I’ll just give it away :)”

I am trading half my box…the Juice Beauty and NuMe for a rollerball and Mirabella, plus I prefer other UD shades to the one I got. I’m so excited for that Mirabella gloss because I am a sucker for different packaging.

      Thanks Laura!

Ooh yes, I really wanted that Mirabella gloss, I would feel so “cool” taking it out of my purse for the touch-ups in public places hehe 🙂 I might trade for it or check eBay in about a week, usually people sell their unwanted items there. Unfortunately I didn’t get the UD, because I never participate in anything on ipsy.com or their Facebook/Twitter etc, but it was a good motivator to start doing so.

i got the mirabella lumizing powder instead of the perfume, cant wait to try it

    • May 14, 2013 / 4:28 pm

Lucky! I’m excited to hear what everyone thinks of the powder, I might pick it up for summer 🙂

Man, now I wish I had signed up for this month, because I would have loved every one of those items!! I must try some Pacifica perfume, I’ve heard nothing but good things about those rollerballs.

    • May 14, 2013 / 7:08 pm

They are wonderful, trust me! I’m hoping to get the Vanilla rollerball in my second bag, but I won’t know until it actually arrives 🙂

  5. May 14, 2013 / 9:21 pm

My concealer is way too light! I have tanned skin yet they sent me Vanilla, which is really fair! I am going to try to use it as shadow base, hopefully it will work. i got the pacifica perfume in vanilla island. I like the scent, but kinda secretly wishing I had gotten the Gardenia instead(eventhough I don’t know how Gardenia smells!)

    • May 14, 2013 / 11:03 pm

It sure sounds like Ipsy isn’t very good at matching us with good concealer colors, as mine was too dark 🙂 I’m glad you like Vanilla Island, seems like it’s a very nice fragrance, and I was thinking of buying it with Ipsy discount if I end up not getting it in my second bag.

I too got the Pacifica body butter and LOVE IT! Decadent scent and soaks into your skin to leave it feeling soft. Loved their roll-on perfume too with its exotic scent. Amazing bag as I thought it would be!

    The Scarf Princess

Yup! I actually think this is Ipsy’s best bag to date! It’s going to be really hard to beat this month’s awesomeness 🙂

Your photos are absolutely gorgeous. Just wanted to point that out. I’m so jealous of your Pacifica rollerball! I received a Juice Beauty lipgloss (the pink one), a Zoya polish in Blu, the St. Tropez lotion, the Yaby concealer, and the Macadamia Healing Oil. I also received one of the Urban Decay eyeshadows, which is what I’m most excited about. I really like the Zoya color you got, too!

    • May 15, 2013 / 9:26 pm

      Thank you Sammi! :))

You got an awesome bag too, it’s too bad that you didn’t get the Pacifica rollerball though, but at least you received the UD eye shadow! Which color did you end up getting?

By the way, that Macadamia oil is actually one of my must-have items for frizzy hair, sure it’s packed with silicones but it does an amazing job at taming the flyaways at summer 🙂

I think you got a great bag this month! I was not quite as impressed with mine. While I got the Juice Beauty lip gloss that I wanted (I received the Fig shade) and a Zoya polish (Jacqueline, a very pale yellow), I also received the St. Tropez lotion, a very dark yaby concealer and the orange sheer Mirabella lipstick. The last three items I will be giving away to a good home because they’re not suitable for my super fair skin. I had really hoped to get some of the Pacifica items this month, but no dice.

    • May 17, 2013 / 11:26 am

That’s a bummer, I really feel like they should have done a better job at matching the concealer colors for everyone. You might have received the St. Tropez because in the beauty profile “Blush & Bronzer” is the same field, so if you selected that it’s probably why. I hope your June bag has everything you want! 🙂
