Glossybox Unboxing and Review: June 2013

In June Glossybox collaborated with a fashion illustrator Dallas Shaw. This box is themed “All-American Beauty” and filled with Dallas’ favorite products: we got a full range of body treats starting from nail polish to luxe hair care. I bought three boxes in hopes of getting some variety, but unfortunately, all three were absolutely identical despite having totally different beauty profiles.

About Glossybox:
Glossybox is one of the most popular international beauty subscription boxes, and now it finally came to the US. Each month Glossybox subscribers receive up to six deluxe-size to full size products from crème de la crème of international brands. At $21/month this is one of the more expensive monthly boxes, but the value of your box will always be above.

c. Booth Honey Almond Nourishing Dry Oil Mist
I expected this dry oil to be a bit sticky and greasy, but it was actually pretty good. I have combination skin so for me this won’t work for the daytime, but it’s perfect for nourishing it at night. A little goes a long way: I sprayed my whole body twice and there’s barely any oil gone from the bottle. As an added bonus, it smells like almonds. I love almonds!

tarte Complexion Enhancing Lipstick in Medium-Tan
Well… The idea is good, but the execution was poor. First of all, I don’t think this color looks flattering on me (duh, it’s for tan skin and I’m Casper white!). It also has poor color payout, so you pretty much have to keep slathering it on until something snows up. To top it all, it has no staying power at all, and disappears from your lips within an hour or sooner, if you decide to eat or drink anything. The only pro I can think of is the moisturizing effect, it really did feel nice and buttery on my lips. Now that I look at it, it actually looks alright in the swatches above, but trust me, it doesn’t look flattering when you look at my whole face.

SpaRitual Nail Polish in Hijinks
Everyone who followed the development of this curated box knows that we were supposed to receive one of six Bondi nail polishes in our boxes. Unfortunately, due to some drama, Bondi withdrew from the collaboration, and these past-season SpaRitual polishes are our last minute “replacements”. I do like SpaRitual, but I would have preferred to receive Bondi instead 🙁 Just so you understand, this shade Hijinks is actually from a 2007 Witty Spring Collection! That’s right, ladies, this shade is at least  6 years old… You can find swatches and review in this post tomorrow.

Oscar de la Renta Essential Luxuries Fragrance Sampler
Okay, although I was not a huge fan of 5 out of 6 of these fragrances, I really appreciate the fact that Glossybox sent the entire pouch full of samples rather than just one. Trying them out sure was fun! If you got this Glossybox, did you like any of them? By the way, my favorite was Santo Domingo, because it smells like clean sheets. So refreshing!

Philip B. Classic Formula Lightweight Conditioning Cream Rinse
This came just in time, because I just ran out of my favorite Beauty protector detangler. I have straight hair, but it’s super fine and frizzy, so skipping a detangler/deep conditioner in my hair care routine is a big no-no. Ladies with peanut allergies, this one contains peanut oil! For everyone else, this product is amazing. I used a quarter-sized amount for my below shoulder length hair, and it detangled and conditioned them like it’s going out of style.

The verdict: Unfortunately, there was certain unpleasant drama associated with this box, which killed some of the excitement for me, but I ended up liking some of the products in the end. I was unhappy about the 6-year-old nail polish color, and the lipstick, but everything else was fun to try.

Thanks Betzy, too bad it has zero staying power and doesn’t look flattering with my skin tone 🙁

Interesting the last post I saw on this calculated the perfume samples at $13 EACH I think based one them being 1 mL. I really would have been most excited by the Tarte lipstick but it seems like such a letdown 🙁

The $13/sample can’t be right because 1mL = 0.03 fl. oz (and Google agrees with me on that). Whoever wrote that post must have forgotten to add the zero after the period and ended up with 0.3 fl. oz which is 8.87 mL

That makes sense! She was saying in her post that she couldn’t believe how much they were worth, now I understand why 🙂 Hehe thanks for clarifying, it’s still a great value box!
