The DOS and DON'TS of Achieving Smooth Summer Skin

I don’t know about you guys, but our summer has been crazy hot here in Michigan this year. With temperatures in high 80s and mid 90s often persisting throughout the night, wearing anything but shorts, skirts, and short dresses feels like you’re in a sauna. With so much skin exposed, I tend to get a little self-conscious. After all, even though I don’t totally neglect my body during the pants weather, I definitely don’t give it as much attention as my face for example. Over the years I found a few ways to quickly rejuvenate my skin all over and bring it to summer-ready condition in one evening. Here are the DO’s and DONT’s of achieving smooth skin for summer!

The DOS and DON'TS of Achieving Smooth Summer Skin

DO…

… exfoliate regularly, depending on your skin type. Oily skin can take 3-4 sessions per week easily, while dry and sensitive skin needs less frequent exfoliation. There are different types of exfoliation to pamper yourself with that range from physical to chemical, so there’s truly something for everyone. When I want to make my skin look amazing the next day, I scrub the body all over with a good physical exfoliant and apply a nighttime moisturizer with a high concentration of skin-smoothing AHAs to my face. In the morning my skin glows like I just came from a SPA!

DON’T…

… forget to apply sunscreen for the next 3 days after your exfoliated [longer if you use a chemical exfoliant]. Exfoliation forcefully removes rough skin cells, exposing a fresh layer that might not have been ready to face the outside world yet. New skin can be quite thin, which makes it many times more susceptible to UV damage, so if you don’t want an unwanted sunburn and hyperpigmentation, a daily SPF30 or higher is a must!

DO…

… use a sunless tanner or a body bronzer if you enjoy the look of sun-kissed skin. It evens out the skin tone and helps makes it look instantly smoother.

DON’T…

… get a base tan [or any tan for that matter]. Baking in the sun to achieve the coveted bronzed glow is doing a huge disservice to your body. Remember: there is nothing healthy about a tan! While that gorgeous caramel color can help hide skin imperfections, tanning is your largest organ’s desperate cry for help.

DO …

… remove unwanted hair gently and effectively. For face I always prefer waxing and for the body I like to mix things up, because some areas respond better to shaving. I’ve been using wax strips for years, and this summer I am back to my trusted Sally Hansen Wax Strip Kit for Face, which I picked up at Walgreens in the cosmetics aisle. I also grabbed Sally Hansen Lavender SPA Body Wax Hair Removal Kit, because it looked interesting and it was sitting right next to the face kit. Just so you know, I always had great results with Sally Hansen wax products. They work even on short hair, help reduce the appearance of hair regrowth, and provide smooth results for up to 8 weeks. It’s perfect if you don’t want to think about hair removal every day!

DON’T …

… forget to soothe the skin afterward! Regardless of how you choose to remove unwanted hair, make sure to apply Aloe Vera gel or Azulene oil. Sally Hansen kits conveniently include a small bottle of it so you have everything you need to achieve great results.
