Conscious Box (Gluten Free) Unboxing and Review: April 2013

You all remember that awesome deal I posted a few weeks ago about the $1.00 Conscious Box, so now I finally received all three of my boxes. The first box I’m going to review is the Gluten Free one. All of them had a few overlapping products that seemed to be the core items this month, so they were present in all three box varieties.

Brad’s Raw Leafy Nacho Kale
I really don’t like kale, always thought it was bitter and too chewy for something that looks like salad leaves. But there was something about these kale chips that I liked, not sure if it was the favor or the way they were dehydrated, but overall I actually felt confident enough to say that I found them enjoyable.

Bakery on Main Fruit & Nut Truebar
I had this bar for a midday snack today, and while it wasn’t particularly mouthwateringly delicious, it was certainly a nice improvement over those gross protein bars. It tasted like a bunch of fruits and nuts coated in some sticky syrup and firmly pressed together, which is pretty much what it is.

Seventh Generation Mandarin Facial Cloths
As you know, I’m a fan of facial wipes of all sorts. I actually use a lot of Seventh Generation household cleaning products already, so it’s nice to see them launch a skin care line as well. The sample came with a coupon for $1.50 off any Seventh Generation personal care product, and I’m definitely going to use it.

Clearly Natural Vitamin E Glycerin Bar Soap
This is a nice sized sample which will last me quite a while. I always like getting bar soaps in my subscriptions, even though I already have a pile of them waiting to be used. It’s really convenient when I have someone staying over, that way everyone has their own personal care products 🙂

Everly Pomegranate Maqui Berry Drink Mix
Haven’t tried this sample yet but the idea of a natural drink mix sounds promising. It’s about time we stopped drinking all that pop and switched to natural drink mixes! You can support Everly on Kickstarter by donating a few dollars to help them start mass producing these drink mixes.

Dapple Baby Bottle & Dish Liquid
Sure, it’s a baby product and I don’t have any kids, but if it’s safe enough to wash baby bottles, it is safe enough to use for the rest of my dishes, too. It’s formulated to fight the odors usually caused by breast milk residue, so it’ll be great to wash plastic containers that had food in them for a while.

Rockin’ Green Laundry Detergent
Ooh now that sounds interesting, an eco-friendly detergent that also helps improve my hard water! I’m going to have fun trying it out. This little sample packet lasts for up to 4 loads, which is pretty impressive considering it’s not that big of a size.

TotLogic Body Lotion
I applied the same logic as the dish soap to this sample, if it’s safe for the babies it should be safe enough for me to use, too. This lotion is packed with moisturizing ingredients and doesn’t contain harmful chemicals like phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde, DEA, colorants, artificial fragrances and PEG.

QSpeed CoQ10 Supplement
Coenzyme Q10 supplements are usually taken by people much older than myself, and I know my dad takes these along with his cholesterol-lowering medication, so I’ll save these for him. I’m sure he will be happy to try something new and good-tasting 🙂

NurturMe Organic Baby Food Plump Peas
More baby products to repurpose… I will add this into my veggie smoothie to boost its nutritional value, since it’s basically dehydrated pea protein anyway.

Blue Orchid Botanicals Wildflower Cleansing Grains
I like the idea of making my own exfoliator, I have previously used a similar product from Tatcha and loved it. I can mix it with my regular cream cleanser to give it a slight scrubbing effect, or I can use it on its own by simply adding some water to it.

  • The best: My favorite product in this box from what I have tried was definitely the Nacho Kale sample. But the thing I’m most excited about is the laundry detergent, I can’t wait to try it out and see the difference it makes for my hard water.
  • The worst: Not the worst, but something I personally won’t use is the Q10 supplement.

The verdict: Overall from what I have seen, this is a pretty accurate representation of Conscious Box contents. It’s really an assortment of many kinds of eco-friendly samples: beauty, baby, household, food, and supplements. I liked the variety, but I’m definitely not their target consumer, so I’m going to cancel my subscription for now, because I don’t think I personally enjoyed it enough to pay the full price for it.
