Christian Louboutin Doracandy Loubilaque Lip Gloss

What names come to mind if I asked you to pick a company with the most expensive makeup products? I bet Christian Louboutin would be among your top five; it certainly is one of mine. To this date I’ve only sampled their nail polish, so the new Doracandy Loubilaque Lip Gloss ($85!!) is actually the first makeup product I got to try from the brand. I rarely see reviews of their products, I assume the price plays a major role in that, so I figured I’d share my thoughts on the lip gloss and maybe satisfy your curiosity. After all, don’t you wonder sometimes if Christian Louboutin makeup is worth it?

You probably noticed that the beauty world is currently obsessed with all things holographic, iridescent, sparkling, and glittery. The latest shade additions to Loubilaque family follow suit and contain ‘a combination of iridescent, holographic and metallic glitters [that] create a multi-dimensional look on lips, with a magical color-changing effect’. Doracandy is the most neutral of the four. Louboutin describes it as a candy-like lavender, but to my eye it comes across as mauve with iridescent glitter.

The gloss comes in a signature black box with Louboutin logo, and held firmly inside black velvet mold looking like a precious treasure. The tube itself is probably the most recognizable part of this lip gloss, though. Personally, I think it looks like a Christmas ornament, because it looks like an icicle with pine cone motif. Christian Louboutin insists it’s actually a vial with a mermaid tail pattern, and a silk ribbon to wear it like a pendant. I haven’t actually see anyone wear it like that, not even Louboutin influencers, so I’m not sure that part of their packaging design will persist in future editions.

The wand features a teardrop-shaped doe foot applicator, which is smaller than I thought it would be. My lips are not particularly big, and I needed several passes just to cover them in a single coat of gloss. I don’t know if it’s a good or a bad thing, just something to keep in mind.

The gloss itself is actually great! It’s very sparkly, and looks stunning when all of those little glitters and iridescent shimmers catch the light from different angles. The mauvey shade is not super bright, so the color will be the most visible on people with paler lips, while everyone else will notice a slight tint.

The formula of the gloss is medium-thick. It’s not sticky enough to last an entire day, but also not thin enough to disappear within an hour. On me it wore roughly 3 hours before I had to reapply. Even though the clear coating slowly disappears, the glitters and mauvey pigments actually stay on the skin, so the lips never look naked.

You will LOVE it if:

  • You like long-wearing lip gloss.
  • You love wearing glittery products.
  • You avoid parabens and mineral oil in cosmetics.
  • You don’t mind paying extra for a designer name or pretty packaging.
  • You are a fan of Christian Louboutin.

You will HATE it if:

  • You are not a lip gloss person.
  • You don’t wear glitter.
  • You are on a budget.
  • You only buy from CF brands.
  • You are sensitive to any of the ingredients.

In case you’re wondering how Doracandy Loubilaque Lip Gloss compares to more attainable recent releases, I think it’s pretty similar in the overall look and feel of the new glittery Urban Decay Hi-Fi Shine Ultra Cushion lip glosses, but slightly better.

BOTTOM LINE:

Even though the price point of this beauty is definitely on the high end, loyal fans of Louboutin products will be happy to hear that the formula of Doracandy Loubilaque Lip Gloss is quite lovely. Obviously, the presentation is top notch, too, as expected from a luxury designer brand. Is it worth the price? Sometimes ‘expensive’ doesn’t equal ‘quality’ [like those sketchy mall brands with 24K gold or Dead Sea stuff, you know what I’m talking about], but in this case the formula is actually very good, so I would say yes. It’s a legit designer brand product that is well on par with some of the best department store releases, so if you are someone who enjoys splurging on luxury makeup, you likely won’t be disappointed with your purchase.
