Birchbox Unboxing and Review: April 2013

I can’t believe it’s already April, it sure seems like I just reviewed my March box. Well, this month Birchbox collaborated with Women’s Health magazine to help shape up our beauty routine for the season. As a sweet bonus, all boxes will contain a card that you can mail in to receive a free one-year subscription to Women’s Health magazine or opt out and receive a $9.99 rebate, which I think is pretty generous considering the subscription is free.

About Birchbox:
Birchbox is a subscription service that delivers a box of luxury samples to your doorstep every month. Each box is customized to match your beauty profile to ensure you get the samples you want, you will usually get 4-5 samples and sometimes even full-sized products! The samples vary from make-up and skincare, to food and beauty accessories, and each box is carefully hand-wrapped. At $10/month Birchbox is one of the cheapest monthly beauty subscriptions out there, the value of each box usually ranges from at least $15 and can be as high as $60. They also have a nice rewards program, where for each product survey you complete you get 10 points, every 100 points earns you $10 in Birchbox credits which you can redeem in their online store for full-sized products.

Caudalie Divine Oil
This was one of the items I was hoping to get in my box when I first saw the April spoilers. I’ve always been impressed with the quality and effectiveness of Caudalie products, and it also happens to be my mother’s favorite skin care brand. This dry oil is meant to be used on any part of your body that needs extra nourishing, you can even use it as a shine serum for the hair or as a perfume oil, since it’s mildly fragranced. The sample will last me a while, because four little drops of oil were enough to cover my whole face and neck.

Nexxus Youth Renewal Rejuvenating Elixir
I already have lots of hair oils and serums, but of course there’s no way Birchbox could have known that. Also, I already received this exact sample from Nexxus’ Facebook page a few weeks ago. I feel like I don’t use these hair treatments fast enough, so my collection only keeps growing. This serum smells very nice and left my hair looking healthy and silky, and I’m excited that it will be included in Allure’s summer beauty bag because I’m soooo getting it!

StriVectin-SD Eye Concentrate for Wrinkles
StriVectin is best known for their stretch mark treatments, but they also make great anti-ageing skin care products. This eye concentrate will be going to my mom’s goodie bag because she can appreciate it more than I would, since my fine lines are barely noticeable.

Youngblood Anti-Shine Mattifier
As a proud owner of combination skin I’m always happy to try a mattifying primer, especially since the warm weather is finally coming to Michigan. According to the package, you pat in the primer onto the areas of your face that are prone to getting oily, and it should work kind of like a sponge layer throughout the day. This is a good-sized sample that fits perfectly in my GlamRX Mini palette, so it will snuggle with my Yaby eye shadows there for now 🙂 With this primer my makeup went on more evenly but I honestly didn’t feel the mattifying effect at all, so at least for me, it was ineffective.

Weleda Body Lotion
Looks like I’m sampling Weleda in both my Cravebox and Birchbox this month, which I don’t mind at all because I enjoy their formulas and scents. The rose lotion has a very strong fragrance to it, which some people might find too overpowering, but the other two are pretty neutral. I would splurge on a bottle of Pomegranate lotion, but I really have too many full-sized body lotions waiting to be used right now. Maybe eventually when my Birchbox points are about to expire I’ll consider it.

  • The best: Caudalie Divine Oil because I was really looking forward to trying it. And because it smells heavenly!
  • The worst: Nothing was “the worst” in my box, maybe the Weleda lotion samples just because they were foils, but I really didn’t mind them at all considering how great the rest of my samples were.

The verdict: Overall this was another good month for Birchbox, we sampled many great products and after looking at the box spoilers I thought I would have been happy with almost all variations.
