H2O Plus Spa Sea Lotus Body Wash – I like the size of this sample: not too big, not too small; it’s the perfect amount I would need for a weekend getaway. It smells pretty much like any other “ocean breeze” product, and according to H2O Plus, that’s what aquatic florals and sea grass smell like. The formula boasts mineral-rich red algae and aloe extracts, as well as Vitamin E; but honestly, to me it’s all about how good it cleanses, since my skin is usually dry after the shower no matter what I wash with.

Epic Blend Hemp Coconut Lip Balm – I’m a huge fan of good enough to eat lip balms that contain only natural ingredients. I think that’s the way it always should be, because I don’t see what’s the point in stuffing them with unnecessary chemicals when 100% natural ones are still the best. Hemp extract is known for its softening properties [in fact I think The Body Shop has a Hemp line of products which is very popular with their customers] and coconut oil is a great moisturizer. I almost finished my current lip balm, and when the tube is finally empty, I’ll give this one a shot.

Swissco Bath & Shower Exfoliating Gloves – If I’d known that I was getting these exfoliating gloves in my January Beauty Box 5, I wouldn’t have bought a new pair at TJ Maxx the other day, but I guess it’s nice that now I have a spare. The material is not as rough as it looks, so these scrubbers will most likely provide gentle exfoliation, which means they are suitable for daily use. My current ones are rougher than this so I use them every other day instead.

Nubar Cuticle & Nail Oil – Just what I’ve been looking for! This cuticle oil smells like sweet almonds, no wonder I can’t stop smelling it, since that’s one of my all-time favorite scents. The brush was very stiff at first, like a stick; but then I realized it’s due to bristles being all stuck together, so I fluffed it up and it became a normal soft brush we’re all used to. This oil does a pretty good job at softening and moisturizing my cuticles, and the sample size is perfect for keeping it in my cosmetic bag for on the go touch ups.

Jergens Daily Moisture Dry Skin Moisturizer – This body lotion is a staple in many households, and it’s certainly very emollient and moisturizing. There isn’t much I can say about this product that you all don’t alredy know 🙂

[Bonus] That Awkward Moment Compact Mirror – In January Beauty Box 5 is also promoting That Awkward Moment, coming out in theaters on January 31st. They included a little card with a few tips on how to re-create Ellie’s look from the movie, as well as a pocket mirror stamped with the movie logo. It’s a useful accessory, but I won’t be carrying it around in my purse because I prefer not being a walking advertisement 🙂

THE VERDICT
As you can see, in January we received only skin care and body care samples, but I’m totally ok with that because I need a breather from all the makeup I received across my multiple subscriptions over the past few months. I can see how some of the newer BB5 subscribers would be disappointed, though. I think the products this month are very cohesive in a sense that they all kind of complement each other. We got a nice shower routine here: a body wash and scrubbing mitts, followed by a body lotion, lip balm and cuticle oil to preserve the moisture and maintain our soft skin. The bonus mirror was quite handy, too, although I probably won’t be taking it outside of my house, because I think brand-stamped accessories are tacky.

This is a great box. And I agree, sometimes we need a departure from all the makeup, and just stick to skincare and body care!

    • January 15, 2014 / 9:48 pm

Indeed, a little break never hurt anyone.

  2. January 14, 2014 / 1:35 pm

I always hated subscription boxes that were skincare. I never got skincare products I could use.

    • January 15, 2014 / 9:48 pm

I can definitely see how this would be the case for you Phyrra, since there aren’t many boxes focused only on cruelty-free products 🙁

  3. January 14, 2014 / 3:14 pm

I’m with Phyrra, I don’t like skincare focused boxes. I am doing Ipsy right now because it seems to be makeup-focused, which I like, but it’s nice that this one offers variety, and that you welcomed the break! Want to try that cuticle oil!

    • January 15, 2014 / 9:49 pm

If you’re into almonds, this oil smells heavenly! Seriously, I would just apply it and sit there sniffing my cuticles. I’m weird…

RE: Phyrra & Judy: I don’t think Beauty Box 5 is specific to skincare, but they focused on it for January because it’s winter and it’s important!

    • January 15, 2014 / 9:50 pm

That’s correct, Miranda. Beauty Box 5 normally includes makeup products, but sometimes they think we need a little more pampering than usual, and send us all skincare.

  5. January 14, 2014 / 4:01 pm

A bit too skincare for me too but I love Nubar so it sounds like a cool box!

    • January 15, 2014 / 9:54 pm

I can see how this particular selection wouldn’t have universal appeal, but this type of skincare heavy box is not normal for Beauty Box 5, and they usually send at least one makeup item.

  6. January 14, 2014 / 6:10 pm

This is a great box. My skin gets so dry during the winter and I need all the help I can get.

    • January 15, 2014 / 9:54 pm

Totally agree with you! I normally have combination skin, but it gets all weird and dry in the Winter, so I could use the help of all those butters and lotions 🙂

Looks like a great box, even if it is more skin care than usual. Make up doesn’t look as good without great skin!

In regards to the mirror, I didn’t even connect it to the movie until you mentioned it. I thought it was trying to go for like, “That awkward moment when you have spinach in your teeth/a mascara smudge/etc”, which you’d need a compact mirror for to check out/fix 🙂 Maybe when the movie is forgotten (since I’m pretty sure it will be) it will be kind of fun to take out?

    • January 15, 2014 / 9:55 pm

Good point Rebecca, I didn’t even think about it!

  8. January 14, 2014 / 6:40 pm

I saw another review with the same products – I wonder how much variety there is, even though everyone fills out a profile. I was tempted to subscribe by this box, so hopefully I’ll get great things I can use, too!

    • January 15, 2014 / 9:52 pm

I hope you get things you can use, too. There is usually some variety, but not a lot.

  9. January 14, 2014 / 6:49 pm

I think that a skincare regime is such a personal thing, you may have sensitive skin or oily skin – everyone is different, so I wouldn’t like to receive those products in my subscription box

    • January 15, 2014 / 9:56 pm

That’s very true, Farryn, but such is the nature of subscription boxes – you never know if the products will be hits or misses until you get them.

  10. January 14, 2014 / 10:43 pm

I’d love the Nubar. That would make me smile. My husband would take the Jergens to the gym I’m sure.

    • January 15, 2014 / 9:57 pm

Can’t go wrong with Jergens, it’s a tried and true product that even guys can use. That Nubar oil seriously smells divine, if you’re into almonds.

    • January 15, 2014 / 9:58 pm

Me too, I’m going to take it to Florida and try it there 🙂

    • January 15, 2014 / 10:00 pm

It’s better than I thought, and it smells wonderful. If you ever have a chance to sample it, definitely try it out.

  11. January 15, 2014 / 1:44 am

That’s a great box – I love your photos, as always.

  12. January 15, 2014 / 11:09 am

This one wasn’t my total fave ever, but I still feel like it was worth it and I loveeeee the Nubar. And also anything to do with Zac Efron. IDC if that makes me a cougar haha

    • January 15, 2014 / 10:01 pm

LOL, there’s nothing wrong with that! XD
