Ipsy Review: March 2013

I’m one of those people that actually like to find out what items we get two weeks before I receive my bag. This month we had them all figured out before February was even over. Good job, MUT Ipsy detectives! This month’s theme is The Great Escape, and the bags include fun travel necessities such as credit card-sized GlamRX palettes, makeup removing wipes, hydrating mist and tiny eyeshadows.

About Ipsy:
Each month subscribers will receive a new Glam Bag with deluxe samples and full-sized beauty products customized according to your beauty profile. Members can watch and play along with the stylists with the same products that they are using, all for only $10 a month.

GlamRX Mini Freestyle Palette
his palette is the same size as the one they sell on GlamRX website, but unlike the retail product, it’s empty inside. I’m new to these empty palettes and don’t have much to put in them yet because I usually don’t buy single blush and eye shadow pans. I do like the concept and I’ll probably put the sample shadows in it from now on.

Yaby Eyeshadow Refills in Seashell and Azalea Petal
I really wanted to love these cute little eye shadows, but unfortunately my excitement disappeared the moment I tried to swatch them on my arm. Both of them are very chalky and provide very little pigment, it actually took me over 20 brush swipes to get the colors to show for the swatch picture. Seashell is actually a very pretty shimmery nude that I will be using as my inner corner highlighter, but Azalea petal will probably go unused since I have several similar eye shadows that are way more pigmented.

Juice Beauty Hydrating Mist
The funky smell didn’t stop me from enjoying this nice moisturizing toner. I prefer to spray it on a cotton pad and wipe my face with it after cleansing instead of misting my face with it – that way my skin doesn’t feel sticky afterwards.

LA Fresh Travel Lite Makeup Remover Wipes
I love makeup removing wipes and use them every day, and La Fresh is one of my favorite brands! I put this sample pack into my cosmetic bag so I can always have them with me when I need them 🙂

  • The best: LA Fresh makeup removing wipes, just because they’re my must-have so I’m always happy to have more.
  • The worst: Yaby eye shadows mainly because of their poor pigmentation.

The verdict: This was a decent bag for me personally, but I can see that some people would probably be disappointed. With only four brands represented it might feel like we only got four products to try. The bag itself also was nearly see-through, the material is very thin and feels like a diaper.

That’s the only way I could describe it 🙂

I just got my bag today and it’s just okay. It just felt like it was missing an item, maybe an SPF lipbalm to go with the whole “great escape” theme, seems like that would have been a good choice. I agree w/ you about the eyeshadows and empty palette. It kind of makes me think, even for $10/mo, do I really need more to try more samples at this point?! I might stop for a while so I can use what I already have, LOL 🙂

I know how you feel and I’m so sad that the shadows didn’t work out. I feel like I wasn’t introduced to any new must-haves this month, just more stuff that I already have =/ Also the value of the bag is so much lower than usual 🙁

Great review and similar to my thoughts! This is only my third bag from them so I’m still satisfied but might take a hiatus at some point to use up the duplicate items.

Thanks for introducing me to so many subscription services as I was aware of only a handful before discovering your site!

Not the best month for Ipsy, let’s hope they step up their game. And can you believe that we’re only two weeks away from the April spoilers?

It seems like so many shadows are so beautiful in the pan but so poorly pigmented on the skin…always so disappointing!

Yep, you never really know until you swatch them 🙁

Yeah I didn’t get very excited over this bag at all. I wish their had been one more item.
