Hard Candy Ginormous Lash 086 Mudslide Mascara Review, Pictures, Swatches

Dramatic poster for a dramatic mascara!

Ginormous Lash mascara is yet another product I really wanted to try from Hard Candy, and since I don’t own any brown mascara, I grabbed 086 Mudslide in hopes that it looks nice and natural on my lashes for those days when I want to look like I’m not wearing any makeup.

Hard Candy promises to “fatten your flutter with this lash-plumping formula [and] large brush, with a slightly tapered edge, [that] reaches from root to tip for truly bat-worthy volume and glamour”.

Hard Candy Ginormous Lash Mascara – the wand is big and fluffy with a slightly tapered end

I’ll start by saying that the tube itself is quite large and contains considerably more product than most others I’ve come across, which is great news for those who use mascara several times a day. Many of us, however, only apply it once in the morning, so all of this extra volume is wasted, because it will likely dry out or go bad before we have a chance to use it up, but I guess it’s always nice to have options.

Formula-wise, this mascara falls on the gooey side. You know how sometimes you open a tube and it just looks wet and runny? This one seems more dense, so I almost expected it to start clumping on me. Luckily, the wand was chosen really well, after hugging the stopper it has just the right amount of product to ensure clump-less application. The pigmentation is pretty decent, too, and my lashes looked very close to the color on the wand.

Longevity is just what I’d expect from a decent mascara, as I experienced no fading or smudging from the moment I applied it in the morning, and until I took it off in the evening. I should also mention that I have oily eyelids, so many mascaras give me raccoon eyes, but this one didn’t.

086 Mudslide is a lovely dark brown shade that makes my lashes look very defined and fluttery, which is perfect for my favorite no makeup makeup look. For comparison, if you like Jane Iredale’s Open Your Eyes, you are going to like this one, too.

I found a couple flaws worth mentioning. First of all, this mascara doesn’t hold curl very well, so if you like curling your lashes, you might want to avoid this one. And another con is the lack of lash lengthening properties. If you read the description on the box, Hard Candy promised to deliver dramatic length and volume, so if you are looking for a multi-tasking mascara, this is not the one.

THE VERDICT
Ginormous Lash is yet another nice product from Hard Candy. Its oversized wand ensures that the pigmented formula goes on without clumps, while defining the lashes for extra volume, however, it doesn’t seem to hold curl very well, nor does it add much length.

I just picked this up this weekend. So excited to test this baby out. Love the oversized wand!!

    • March 6, 2014 / 7:56 pm

Aw yeah, this wand is monster! It’s like 50% bigger than your average mascara brush.

It looks like it’s nice for natural looking lashes but what a bummer it doesn’t lengthen.

    • March 6, 2014 / 7:56 pm

Indeed, as you can see from the swatches it fluffed up my lashes nicely, but really didn’t add any length.

I love your hard candy reviews! I have Lashaholic from hard candy and don’t really care for how thick it is so maybe I will try this one.

    • March 6, 2014 / 7:57 pm

Thank you for your kind words, Deanna 🙂 I actually was considering buying Lashaholic for review, but decided to try this one instead, and you’re making me feel glad I did.

Nice review. There are days I like to wear a mascara that just enhances my natural lashes, not really pumps them up. This may just fill the bill. I’ll have to pick it up and give it a whirl. 🙂

    • March 6, 2014 / 7:59 pm

Indeed, this is like a casual tshirt of mascaras, gives the fluff without all the drama. The description is really misleading though, because Hard Candy promises dramatic results, which, as you can see, is not the case here.

  5. March 6, 2014 / 12:29 pm

Great review! I really like natural-looking mascaras for everyday, and this looks like just that!

    • March 6, 2014 / 8:04 pm

Indeed, if this product could be anything else, it’d be yoga pants 🙂

  6. March 6, 2014 / 12:51 pm

Nice review! Your lashes look great. I now want this 🙁

    • March 6, 2014 / 8:03 pm

Thank you, Kim, you are too kind :)) I’m glad you liked my review.

    • March 6, 2014 / 8:02 pm

I agree, it looks nice and natural, however, it didn’t live up to the company’s claims.

  7. March 6, 2014 / 3:44 pm

Wasn’t my fave product but I kept the wand as a brow spoolie!

    • March 6, 2014 / 8:02 pm

Great idea, I might keep it as a brow spoolie too when I’m done with this one.

  8. March 6, 2014 / 3:58 pm

It doesn’t look like it adds color, either? Is it supposed to be brown?

    • March 6, 2014 / 8:02 pm

Yep, it’s supposed to be dark brown, but my lashes are already dark brown, so idk. Basically, it adds the fluff, some color, but nothing more than that.

  9. March 6, 2014 / 4:18 pm

I’ve never tried brown mascara, but my mom insists on it. Very natural look- almost too much so!

    • March 6, 2014 / 8:00 pm

Indeed, it really just defined my lashes and that’s about it. It’s a good choice as far as natural-looking mascaras go, though.

  10. March 6, 2014 / 7:19 pm

It’s hard to find a good brown mascara!!!!

  11. March 6, 2014 / 10:56 pm

I have had terrible luck with Hard Candy. I love the blush and shadows but the rest hasn’t worked at all for me

    • March 7, 2014 / 9:18 am

Bummer! I’m assuming that also includes Glamouflage concealer? Because that’s another purchase-worthy Hard Candy product I would personally recommend. It’s probably one of the best drugstore concealers and it lasts forever.

    • March 7, 2014 / 9:20 am

Likewise, Kimmi, I like the natural look of this mascara as well. However, the company promises drama, and that’s clearly not the case with this mascara.

  12. March 7, 2014 / 1:48 am

Great review – I will most likely skip this one!

    • March 7, 2014 / 9:19 am

Thank you! Yes, if you are looking for dramatic Oompf-y lashes, this is the wrong mascara to buy.

  13. March 8, 2014 / 8:20 pm

Looks great if you’re a fan of more natural lashes- I go for more oomph though 😀

    • March 10, 2014 / 8:08 pm

Exactly! I wish Hard Candy wrote a better product description, because in no way is this mascara “dramatic”.

  14. March 8, 2014 / 11:23 pm

I would really like to try out more Hard Candy products but my local WalMart’s selection is not good at all and what they do have is usually picked over and packaging messed with. (sad face). I did just get some of Hard Candy’s eye shadow pigments on clearance, there were 2 bottles of pigment in each package and each package was $3.00, So I am excited to try those out and sharing my opinion on them.

    • March 10, 2014 / 8:11 pm

I know how you feel, usually my Walmart doesn’t have the best selection either, but I must have happened to be there just after they restocked, so all the shelves looked neat and stuffed with products for once. Looking forward to reading your review of those pigments!
