In the month of October La Mer‘s best-selling The Hand Treatment will be sold in Limited Edition pink packaging. Portion of the proceeds, and I believe it’s $10 from each cream sold, will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation [with a maximum donation of $45,000]. Normally I don’t buy really expensive hand creams, but this one was really calling my name.

The Hand Treatment features La Mer’s signature ingredient – miracle broth – which is a combination of specially harvested sea kelp extract and other powerful botanicals and minerals, enhanced by the powers of sound and light waves. Gimmicky as it may sound, there is some scientific proof that certain sound frequencies can alter the matter on a molecular level, so I would not be surprised if the secret of La Mer’s popularity was not in the type of algae used for the broth, but the frequency of sound waves used during the fermentation process..

This hand cream is obviously on the pricey side, and when paying top dollar for a high end product I expected high end result. Happy to report that The Hand Treatment delivered on its promise to deeply hydrate and repair dry skin, and to be honest, this might be the best hand cream I have ever used. I love my L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream, but this one is on a whole another level.

First of all, it’s very thick and balmy, and like Creme de La Mer [their original facial moisturizer], it turns into a lotion that sort of melts into the skin when it comes in contact with warm hands. To fully cover the area I only needed a pea-sized amount, and considering how many times I re-apply hand cream every day, this is pretty good news.

What I really like about this hand cream is the finish, or rather, the lack of thereof. When I am done massaging it into the skin, I am left with soft, velvety surface, that is not sticky, waxy, or powdery. It just feels like my skin, as if it was soft like that to begin with, and that unique “no-finish finish” is the main reason I fell in love with The Hand Treatment.

Unfortunately, there is just no way I could afford to buy it regularly because of its price point [normally it’s priced $80 for 3.4 oz], but I am thankful to La Mer for making this hand cream affordable for the month of October, and for the opportunity to donate to breast cancer research. Right now The Hand Treatment in Limited Edition packaging is sold out at most major online retailers that carried it, it’s even gone from the official website, but Nordstrom, Bergdorf Goodman, and Saks Fifth Avenue still have a few in stock.

Do you need it? If price is not an issue, then yes, you do. This is what I call the perfect hand cream – nourishing, hydrating, restores the skin immediately, all that without leaving any residue behind. It’s like your hands but better. I wish I could tell you there’s an affordable alternative, but truth is, the October LE packaging is the affordable alternative.

PRICE & AVAILABILITY
$40-45 USD for 1.7 oz. Available at Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman.
