First Time Adding Color Streaks To My Hair With Redken’s NEW Color Rebel Hair Makeup

Aside from doing an all-over color and highlights, I never really experimented with my hair, because I thought color streaks are best left for teenagers or people who prefer alternative style. Since I am neither, I was convinced that there’s just no way something like that would ever look good on me, but recently I had an opportunity to try new Redken Color Rebel Hair Makeup so I had a good excuse to experiment.

“Using makeup technology with direct color pigments, Color Rebel deposits a very fine colored micro-coating on the surface of the hair, making it resistant against water and mechanical aggressors, such as brushing, blowdrying or flatironing. The hydrophobic nature of its micro-coating limits modification or transfer.”

Color Rebel Hair Makeup comes in five shades: Purple Riot, Rebel Without a Coral, Red-Y To Rock, Gilty As Charged, Punked Up Pink. I randomly received Purple Riot and Rebel Without a Coral, which are both shades I would have picked for myself if I had a choice.

The instructions were quite simple:

1. Shake well and twist the cap, following the arrows.

2. Apply to clean dry hair in a smooth sweeping motion.

3. Let hair air dry or blow dry for faster results.

Since I’m new to wearing bright colors in my hair, I decided to go with a few streaks. During the application my hair started to coil a little, so I probably wouldn’t apply it on large areas, because I like to keep it straight. Once dry, the formula felt like a very thick layer of hairspray, and the strands I applied it to became a bit crunchy.

Redken says that the color should wash off after two shampoos, but if you wish to speed up the process, you can use their Hair Cleansing Cream, a drop of Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine or some argan oil and rub the hair between your fingers until the pigment disappears. Since I use sulfate-free shampoo, the pigment took four washes to fully come off, but seeing that gradual fading was actually kind of fun.

I think I would certainly use Redken Color Rebel Hair Makeup again, especially if I have an outfit that calls for something edgier than my normal ‘do. I wasn’t a fan of the crunchiness, but I think as long as the color is applied to small sections, the damage is no greater than from using regular hairspray or a sea salt texturizer.
